Just to clarify - both the nippers are boys. Must admit I’m not overly keen on pocket money at this age, I agree with many that they are too young - although something deep down tells me that they are never too young to learn the value of a pound - which was something I don’t think I dealt with successfully enough as a parent. And in any case - they get absolutely everything they want - and to be serious for a minute - far too much, but any time I protest it falls on deaf ears. My garden is covered with swings, slides, trampolines etc, even an electronic mini Vespa - which is quite cool to be honest. Only last week Lady Lucan bought an inflatable paddling pool that resembles a cross between the water shoot they have at the end of I’m a Celebrity and a leisure centre where the water slides leave the building, go over the adjacent road and back into the pool. The only space left is earmarked for a fort project that will need a team of professional builders to erect. Rewind a few years and my lawn was like a striped paradise but now it’s like a mini Alton Towers. [Post edited 20 Aug 2022 11:07]

What’s the going pocket money rate for a four year old? on 11:09 - Aug 20 with 665 views | OldFart71 | 4 years old is too young for pocket money. Maybe 6 or 7. Personally can't remember being given pocket money. My Grandmother would come around to our house and give me some pennies ( The 120 to the pound type, pre decimal) and I would pop around to the local sweet shop. You could then get eight chews for a penny. You also had sherbet dabs, imps, cola cubes, pineapple chunks, coconut mushrooms, liquorice pipes, sweet cigarettes, squares of bubble gum with a football card, sherbet lemons etc. Then when in my early teens I worked on a farm at 1s6d per hour there were 20 shillings in a pound. I never asked my parents for anything the fact that they loved and cared for me was enough. But of course they bought things for me. If we went to a local Town I would get a Matchbox toy 2s 6d.

sorry got a mixed up message. if its 2 boys then be the male role model in their life without surpassing their dad and do boy stuff which can be as cheap as chips. Walks swimming adventure stuff camping and they will adore you for all their lives. Best of luck and enjoy. [Post edited 20 Aug 2022 12:05]

When our adopted daughter eventually moves in ( taking longer than we thought when we were matched in late April, that’s partly down to stretched social services though) I know pocket money can wait a bit longer.

We’ve done similar with our little one, albeit he’s only 8 months old! But we set up a savings account for him and me and the missus put in a bit each month, which my parents then match it. So should be a nice little nest egg for when he’s a bit older!

I’m gonna open an account for them both. They don’t need pocket money from grandparents - although that was never in question anyway.

Cracking stuff, lovely to hear that you're going through that process and adopting. Well done, such a lovely thing to do Family member has done the same and we are all waiting (very impatiently!!) to welcome her to the family.

What’s the going pocket money rate for a four year old? on 12:55 - Aug 21 with 480 views | blueasfook | I think a reward based system is the best option. Get them used to the idea that work=reward from a young age. For example: Cleaning grandad's car = £5 (Half the price of going to the local car wash so win-win), Mowing the lawn = £3 (may vary depending on size of lawn) Plumbing jobs = £hourly rate to be discussed and agreed with said 4 year old up front Fetching groceries from local supermarket = £3 per bag of shopping. The more they can carry, the more they make. I would also include deductions to be made for errors in picking up the wrong things. Dog walking = £0. It is beneficial to their fitness Just some examples there. Obviously you can tailor this reward-based pocket money model to suit the particular chores you would like the child to do. Hope this helps. BAF

Bernard Cribbins joke A travelling salesman is working a posh area. He knocks on the door of a big house and a 6 year old boy answers. In one hand he's got a large cigar and in the other a balloon of brandy. 'Hello Sonny' , says the salesman, 'are your mummy and daddy at home?' The kid replies 'does it f***ing look like it?'
