Brendan Rodgers Sacked (n/t) on 18:15 - Sep 5 by mylittletown | Small city? 'Leicester and the associated urban area is the 11th most populous in England and the 13th most populous in the United Kingdom.' I think that the city is a dump, and I have never liked the football club since they all appeared at Portman Road wearing tights in the early/mid 70s, but it is not a small city club. |
I’ve been to Filbert St a few times back I the day so have a soft spot for them. Appreciate they spent a lot of dough but it was good to see them win the Prem and break the monopoly of the big clubs. They aren’t a huge club though, quite a few midsize clubs in the region isn’t there, and they are huge on egg-chasing.

Was a time I spent a fair bit of time in and around Leicester for work purposes but I never really got to know the place outside of the routes I had to use/places I had to be. I will stand up for the place though on one or two levels. There was some fantastic food to be found if you knew where to look. There were some excellent cash and carry set ups if you knew where to look. Traffic could be horrendous.

With regard to my earlier post I know Leicester pretty well. I quite like it as a city. There are the rubbish areas, but name me anywhere that doesn’t have those. There are plenty of nice areas in and around it too. The City has good communications, lots of sport, retail, retail parks if that’s your thing, varied food outlets and a fantastic market. Plenty going on. As for the football club, I’ve seen them a lot over the years and have no problem with them. The best of the Midlands clubs in many ways, though that’s not saying much. The Filbert Street ground was odd. Two non league stands, two big ones, but who cannot look back with affection at it after the two Leeds 6th Rd replay games in 1975?

They are now feeling vulnerable with Vardy seemingly a spent force , schmiikael gone , ant that player Chelsea signed , also Tielmans is wanted by Arsenal , squad breaking up fast . Ps excuse the player name spells lol
Brendan Rodgers Sacked (n/t) on 20:42 - Sep 5 with 1126 views | King_of_Portman_Rd | They have ambitious plans to expand one side of their stadium to add 10+ thousand seats I believe, plus their training facility and not being in Europe this year they simply don’t have the money I would expect that if they have/will sack him it might have something to do with Bournemouth shopping for a new manager and if Leicester are sensible Sean Dyche would be the most suitable appointment.. and maybe they’re concerned that Bournemouth might get in there first

A nice summary of the challenges they face (whatever the spellings!). It’s hard, almost impossible for a smaller club to replace some of those names with guaranteed quality.

Relatively small when compared to cities such as Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and London. They’ve overachieved for a good five or six years. But I guess owners and fans are never really happy .

I've only been there once, and I remember it as having a HUGE park/recreation ground, with loads of games of football and cricket going on side by side, some pitches overlapping. Can you confirm if that memory is correct?

It's small to win the premier league. London, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham are all clearly bigger (we're talking about cities here, not straggly bits that could be counted as part of a wider metropolitan area), off the top of my head. That's 13 premier league teams situated in bigger cities. The only settlements smaller than Leicester to boast a top flight champion in the last sixty years (since Ipswich Town won the league in 1962) are Derby, Blackburn and probably Nottingham (Nottingham was bigger than Leicester when Forest won the league, but I'll allow it on the basis that Nottingham is slightly smaller now, and it was smaller when Forest won the league than Leicester was when Leicester did). So Leicester have managed something which the great Brian Clough and the very rich Jack Walker have managed in the last 60 years, but not really anyone else. (I'm putting Derby's second title at least partly down to Clough's prior brilliance).

So we've all been arguing about Leicester's standing as a city for nothing?

Hmm - well if you are not allowing wider metropolitan areas, Leicester, 348,000 people is more than twice as big as Kensington and Chelsea, 156,000,. It is much bigger than the London Borough of Haringey which includes Tottenham, 248,000 etc etc The population of Manchester is 547,627. Divide by 2 and you have 278,000 each for Man U and Man C. (Not that Spurs have won the league in 60 years)

"But it has not been to the level [expected]. It is not easy when you are not getting results but it provides the motivation to get things right."'
