Just reminding you here. 22:02 - Oct 23 with 3237 viewsBlueBadger

Rishi Sunak has spent most of the last 3 years propping up Boris Johnson, opposing public health measures in a pandemic, quietly ramping up austerity and handing tax cuts out the wealthiest whilst offering below inflation pay rises to public sector workers who've been on the receiving end of real-terms pay cuts over the last decade or so.
Iain Banks on 'decent Tories', springs to mind.

New New Labour are similarly trapped in a low taxation mentality.

But you’re talking 1 or 2 percent here and there. The tax take and spending need to go up by 10% to put the UK near our neighbours who seem to take running a modern, civilized country a little more seriously than we do with the low-investment, “trickle-down” rut we’re stuck in.

If you tax too much, salaries will need to rise higher which in turn will fuel inflation further leading to higher interest rates. If you follow the 2 main parties who are both going for growth you will continue to get higher inflation. Whatever happens is not going to be a quick fix, the money that covid cost is eye watering.

So large state high tax is the way forward? If your tax was raised to 45p in the £ and the state told you how you spend your money, I bet you would be the first to complain.
"But you crack on"

High tax nice country - works for people like the Scandinavians.

Yes, people do need to be told how to spend their money. Otherwise they'd blow every penny on Chinese-manufactured cr@p from Amazon, then whinge when no binmen come to take away the packaging.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

That’s trying to game the system though, rather than design and operate a system that works better for society and the economy.

The reason we’re struggling more than others is because, in the past and now, we haven’t taxed wealth anything like we should have and similarly not invested in society and its prospects. And we exhaust government borrowing whenever we can to give it to donors, backers and lobbyists and actively deny the possibility of future investment. Now we’re left trying to jump-start the old, under-powered and badly maintained engine on the flashy kit car of our economy.

It’s a democratic travesty that the UK economy and society have been so hollowed out over decades and the major parties and pundits haven’t even stopped to question it. Mainly because they made sure they were getting paid.

Never had you down as a Corbynista.

“salaries will need to rise higher which in turn will fuel inflation further leading to higher interest rates.”

It’s been said a million times, but I suspect you read the Sun rather than The Economist, inflation is a global concern and it’s being driven by:

1) global commodity prices - largely shortages related to the Russian “Special Operation
2) continuing lockdowns due to China’s fanciful ‘zero COVID’ policy

It isn’t workers in the Uk getting a 3pc pay rise, the only people pushing that narrative are the Tories. I’d give you some links but you won’t read them..

I am not a fan of Rishi Sunak's political worldview, but whilst we are in the mud as a country, we need a serious politician who understands the challenges of what is involved in sorting this country out, most notably economically.

He was the one deemed by the MPs as being the best person to do this a few months ago, but the members decided he wasn't because he 'stabbed' Boris in the back.

Whether he backed Boris or not, he was the first figure, and biggest figure, in any position that matters that did the decent thing.

If we want the country to be in it's best state when the next GE comes around, and it likely won't be soon enough for most, then Sunak is the man who will be best placed to delver that

I find the idea that party members should make the final choice rather silly.

Bit like the board of ITFC asking season ticket holders to select a new manager from a short list of two.

The significant change in procedures this time is having a vote if Mordaunt meets the threshold so that members get to know which of the two MPs support.

Had they done it last time I doubt Truss would have been elected.

I don't think there's anything the Tories can do to avoid them being binned at the next election. They might close the gap compared to recent polls, but I think they're out on their ear and rightly so. People talk of short memories, but I don't think it's the case this time given how much of a circus it's been and the extent to which sentiment and support has swung away from them.

I'm a patriot, I want this country to be the best version of itself it can be for me, my children, and everyone in it. I don't think the Tories are the party to best deliver that, but the reality of the situation we find ourselves in is they will be in power for the next 2 years. I really don't buy the view that we should hope for more turmoil to best enhance Labours chances at the next GE. There's far too much at stake and 2 years is a long time to cause yet more damage. For me Sunak is best placed to at least bring some stability in that time and navigate through what will be challenging economic headwinds. The least worst option, and I'm breathing a bit of a sigh of relief that it's set to be him and not Johnson.

You would rather pay for private healthcare than have an NHS? Prefer private education to having a state education system? Would prefer people rely on foodbanks, workhouses and charity than have a welfare state? Don't want libraries. You would prefer to pay for a private refuse collection (or just litter) than have a bin collection? You don't want any free parks and open spaces or play areas? You think everyone should have to pay full price for private dental care?

Do you realise that only the richest 10% will benefit from this? And that is only if you assume they get no benefit at all from a literate, alive workforce and a less-polluted environment.

Your ideology is very Tory and frankly either stupid, despicable or more likely both.

Suspect there is clear majority who feel the Tories can’t deliver but there clearly isn’t a majority who believe Labour can do so. Unless Starmer can deliver it is unlikely Labour will have an overall majority in HoC but will be the largest Party in Parliament
