Multicultural Britain 10:49 - Oct 25 with 4071 views | GlasgowBlue | As of today we have a Christian King, a Hindu Prime Minister, a Jewish Home Secretary and a Muslim Mayor of London. Add to that a Muslim Scottish Labour leader. Regardless of their politics, this really does show that multiculturalism has been a success. It's time we started celebrating the diverse culture of our country and the positives that immigration has brought to us. [Post edited 25 Oct 2022 10:49]

Multicultural Britain on 16:05 - Oct 25 by Ryorry | Other people have made exactly the same point but you've not had a go at them - as has happened several times before. Me sticking you on ignore would clearly not solve the problem. |
I am very busy at work. That was my first post in this thread. I haven't read the thread in full and your post stood out as you said you really dislike his policies. That's why I made the point. You and GB are older than me. Experience provided context that I had not considered. I was lucky to grow up in a family and at a school where people were people and kids were kids regardless of colour, religion etc. If anything, that made me naïve to how common this kind of discrimination was/is. It was not personal. We've exchanged some nice PMs over the years. What would I actually get out of targeting you on here? We've had our disagreements but when we've both been on here this long we've had disagreements with everyone. Again, nothing personal.

Multicultural Britain on 14:35 - Oct 25 by GlasgowBlue | Of course they should be judged on their policies. And BAME politicians should be held to account in the same easy as a white politician. However, we aren’t discussing his policies. We are discussing glass ceilings being shattered. When I was growing up, people like Sunak and Khan would have been called P**s at school every single day. People would have wiped their hands after serving him in a sweet shop. I saw it. It is something to celebrate that the highest public office in the country can be held by a man of colour. Multicultural Britain on 18:05 - Oct 25 with 795 views | eireblue | It’s time we started..? From Wikipedia “ Multicultural policies were adopted by local administrations from the 1970s and 1980s onwards. In 1997, the newly elected Labour government committed to a multiculturalist approach at a national level…” A little bit late to the party GB, but sure, of course you can join the rest of us in the celebration. 😉

Yes. We as a country. Society. Some of us have been trumpeting multiculturalism and the positive benefits of immigration, both in the real and virtual world, for many years. But sadly, as a country, there is a tendency to all too often find the the negatives in immigration and multiculturalism.

Multicultural Britain on 14:24 - Oct 25 by Guthrum | Strictly, Disraeli was of Jewish heritage - his father had renounced the faith and had his children baptised into the CofE when Benjamin was 12 years old. He could not have become an MP otherwise, before the law was changed in 1858. |
can i ask a question through lack of knowledge on this. if your parents are jewish and they renounced judaism are the parents still jews. as i was led to believe jews are a race. or i am getting confused

He has reinstated Braverman who said she dreams of flying them out there (or something of the like) so I wouldn't hold your breath. What a despicable thing to dream of.

Yeah, my hope for a fresh start and some competence has evaporated quickly today. It’s all about stopping the Tory infighting. Depressing stuff.

Judaism can be a religion, race and culture. You can be a non practicing Jew but if you born to a Jewish mother then you are a Jew, no matter what they believe or practice. It’s probably best described as an ethno religious grouping.

All fair points. I go back to an interview I read with Trevor Nelson a few years ago. He was saying that when the TV show Desmond’s came in TV, he felt empowered. All of his friends were saying how they never saw people like them on TV unless they were a servant or a drug dealer. It made he feel more like he belonged.

Agree with all of that. It’s tempered slightly by him needing to joke about his own ethnicity to fit in with his colleagues, the Tory members rejection of him and a lot of the vile stuff we’re seeing about him on social media. It’s an important moment, but there’s still a long, long way to go (for the Tories and the nation as a whole). National public attitudes are the biggest worry for me, as hate crimes are on the rise and there still seems a ridiculously high level of anger misdirected at immigrants and especially asylum seekers. And it looks like Sunak wants to continue to politically exploit that, which is thoroughly depressing.

“As a country….” Speak for yourself, I have been in the country and society for awhile now, and most people I know love a bit of multicultural celebration, maybe you should try and find a smaller group of people, a bit less than a country say, and focus your efforts and speak directly to and about them.
