This 'Medals2Matches' thing 17:18 - Nov 9 with 5040 views | Zx1988 | I know it's not particularly representative, but going by the comments on the news article it doesn't seem to have been particularly well received. It does seem a little bit too American for my liking, especially with the linking of wearing one's medals to unlocking discounts on drinks.

This 'Medals2Matches' thing on 18:14 - Nov 9 by FrimleyBlue | I just hope no one is mugged by a drugged up teen looking for an ebay item. No need to have medals on display unless attending a funeral/memorial event. |
Wow this and ball not being a team player in the same week Fantastic

This 'Medals2Matches' thing on 18:41 - Nov 9 by BlueBadger | Increasingly cheapened and made slightly tacky by people who appear to want to turn Remembrance into Halloween, only with war rather than pumpkins? [Post edited 9 Nov 2022 18:45]

That's people - not the poppy. The poppy means the same to me as it has all my life. I'll continue to wear one and pay no regard to those who attempt to hijack it for reasons that were not originally intended in 1921.

It's also the RBL though, who would appear to encourage it all. It would be oh-so-easy for them to come out and say "stop it, you're all taking this way too far, it's getting silly and detracting from the true meaning of the Poppy Appeal", but it's a fantastic little earner for them. Any other charity would kill to have the level of penetration that the Poppy Appeal enjoys, alongside the rabid enforcement of participation from certain sections of society. https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2010/nov/05/poppy-appeal-subverted-veterans-compl [Post edited 10 Nov 2022 10:34]

I spent 12 hours last Thursday at Picadilly Circus as part of London Poppy Day. The vast majority of those who donated/purchased from us wanted the simple metal pins or the traditional paper poppy. The most generous donations were for simple paper poppies. Some people were after the 'bling' - we only had a limited selection with us but I thought they were all quite nice pieces of jewellery. The large charities are all competing for attention and donations and I guess there's a risk for the RBL that if they play it down too much they'll get left behind. I do agree that the 'poppy mafia' can go OTT - most of my serving and veteran mates aren't like that and recognise that it's a personal choice and for most of us a period of quiet reflection of friends and colleagues who are no longer with us.
