Up until around 5 years back I was a pretty hardcore weekend binge drinker. Hangovers started getting worse and I was generally feeling rough for days afterwards. Slowly started phasing out booze and now in my mid 30's I barely touch the stuff. I sleep so much better, have much more energy and have been told I look like I've lost some weight. It's amazing how much disposable income you have too (even with kids which is another catalyst in the hardly drinking booze).
If we go up and see Madge's parents, I might have a few beers in an evening, but I don't feel like I have that lack of a stop button any more. I'll have two and be "Yep, I'm done".
I'm also very grateful to my close friends. I said I'm not drinking at the moment and the reaction was "No problem mate, come for a few hours if you can and head off when you need". No pressure whatsoever which is how it should be.
TLDR: Barely drink these days.

Social drinker. Enjoy the whole "pub" thing. Turn up to natter with your family and others there. There is a whole world of people out there. All with different opinions. You are never to old to learn from. Never was a binge drinker. Like my Dad, 3 pints is always enough. Happy to say that I can walk into half a dozen pubs and they say "Hello Mr Kicking". Never have any trouble finding a sparky, chippy or p!umber.

Glad you found out in time. Social drinking means for me moderation and enjoying company. No binge.

I drink on a social basis only. If I am out for a meal, probably a cocktail followed by half a bottle of wine. I try not to drink at home other than special occasions. Can go many weeks without a drop. Take it or leave it.

Huh, I have a fair less healthy relationship with alcohol than most of you lot and I'm aware it's something I should address... Drank a lot through uni, who didn't? Went travelling, drank a lot. Came home and got a job with a well known wine company who encouraged us to take a different bottle home most nights to "expand our knowledge"... This was the early/mid 2000s and since then I've always liked a drink of an evening. If it was just beers I could probably knock that on the head easy enough, low/non alcohol beers are so good nowadays I could replace normal beer with them when watching the footie (often do) and then have a few when I was out with mates (rarer and rarer these days). But wine remains my problem I'd say, I bloody love a good bottle of wine and find myself craving it most nights. Probably have 2 or 3 glasses 3 or 4 nights a week and normally a whole bottle of red on a Saturday night watching a film. I'm aware this is much more than I should drink, I spoke to a doctor yesterday about an unrelated issue and she was very disapproving (understandably) so I will be trying to cut down. Anyone know any good wine substitutes??
Heroin doesn't really work with alcohol or so I've heard. I drink about a half bottle of red pretty much every night and perhaps 3 or 4 bottles of beer too over a weekend. I thought it was meant to be healthy and anyway I quite like it.
"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."
I don't aim to get drunk and down as much as I can, but I enjoy not having a limit, so ideally when I don't have to get up for something in the morning and certainly not when I've got to drive in the morning. However with kids and their weekend activities that can be quite rare!
Unless I was told the next drink is going to kill you I don't think I'd manage going dry for good, but I am also happy and capable of going for a couple of weeks or so if needs be.
Hard to say really, I might have a can of an evening once a week if it’s been a busy day, or if I just want to. Then won’t have nothing for another 2 weeks. Then we might have a home game and I’ll have 5/6 pints. Then I’ll not drink again for another 2/3 weeks, or we might have a London away day where it’s 8am-2am on it… then 3 weeks off.
Basically, if there’s an event where drinking is on the cards I’ll participate. But as has been mentioned on here by others, driving the kids around, or being on call for work, often takes over.
I'm doing dry January for the third year in a row, it has shown me 'being on the level' where you are neither up nor down for many days, just plain ordinary on a level. Theres something pleasant about a good pub atmosphere, I live in the country now. After warm season MTB riding our group stop off in the pub, a country pub and we have 3 pints and its enjoyable. Im perfectly fine with 2 or3 pints of good Ale now.
Back in the Uni days I developed a proper drinking habit. Now have a family but make room for a few drinks on occassion, my wife and I take alternate turns for the odd few drinks with friends.
But British culture has adapted somewhat, and thats why so many pubs are closing. I do drink at home but thats the thing i'd happily do without, a couple with a meal out in a good real ale pub, that suits me and a few cocktails in the Canary islands on holiday.
I gave up drinking alcohol 14th July 2023 and I haven't missed it a bit.
I'm 36 now- all power to those who enjoy a drink and it doesn't effect them mentally or physically, but I've seen it really mess up far too many people I care about.
