What's your relationship with alcohol these days? 11:10 - Nov 29 with 11766 views | RobTheMonk | Up until around 5 years back I was a pretty hardcore weekend binge drinker. Hangovers started getting worse and I was generally feeling rough for days afterwards. Slowly started phasing out booze and now in my mid 30's I barely touch the stuff. I sleep so much better, have much more energy and have been told I look like I've lost some weight. It's amazing how much disposable income you have too (even with kids which is another catalyst in the hardly drinking booze). If we go up and see Madge's parents, I might have a few beers in an evening, but I don't feel like I have that lack of a stop button any more. I'll have two and be "Yep, I'm done". I'm also very grateful to my close friends. I said I'm not drinking at the moment and the reaction was "No problem mate, come for a few hours if you can and head off when you need". No pressure whatsoever which is how it should be. TLDR: Barely drink these days.

What's your relationship with alcohol these days? on 13:37 - Nov 29 with 1969 views | Churchman | I will be honest - I really enjoy a drink. I always have. These days I share a bottle of wine with Mrs C most evenings when we are in, unless I have a few beers with my buddy, which generally I do once a week. If we go for a meal, it’ll be wine after a beer starter. Vintage port and single malt whiskey will be opened and enjoyed in the house over Christmas on top of the sparkling wine, ordinary wine, mulled wine, while Mrs C will have a Baileys or two. I do alternative weekends helping out my dad and I don’t drink while I’m there. I don’t do alcohol if I am driving and am careful the night before. The days of mad drink ups/all nighters/hangovers are behind me. I feel too unwell for too long if I over indulge. I love beer, wine, port, scotch and I always will. Do I drink too much? Yep, but it’s a choice thing.
What's your relationship with alcohol these days? on 13:37 - Nov 29 with 1972 views | BloomBlue | I've gone full cycle, in my younger days had a social life which entirely revolved around alcohol but when kids arrive it puts pressure on the finances and alcohol became a waste of money. But after kids start their own life and then post grandkids/great grandkids I now I have money to waste on alcohol again. Mostly drinking at home but normally have a couple of large glasses of whisky most days and Friday/Saturday nights is beer night. Probably drinking more now than is healthy and walking negates drinking too much to avoid hangovers I guess but given my age wtf.

What's your relationship with alcohol these days? on 13:44 - Nov 29 with 1952 views | Tractor_Buck | Now in my early 50s and proud to be a lightweight when it comes to drinking. Normally have a post-match pint, and a pint if we go out for a meal but otherwise it just doesn't bother me. Went out in London with my Uni student son and his mates a couple of weeks ago - 4 pints of cider later (Christ, that was expensive) I had trouble finding the bus back to the hotel and I just don't enjoy that feeling any more.

What's your relationship with alcohol these days? on 12:43 - Nov 29 by CaptainAhab | Huh, I have a fair less healthy relationship with alcohol than most of you lot and I'm aware it's something I should address... Drank a lot through uni, who didn't? Went travelling, drank a lot. Came home and got a job with a well known wine company who encouraged us to take a different bottle home most nights to "expand our knowledge"... This was the early/mid 2000s and since then I've always liked a drink of an evening. If it was just beers I could probably knock that on the head easy enough, low/non alcohol beers are so good nowadays I could replace normal beer with them when watching the footie (often do) and then have a few when I was out with mates (rarer and rarer these days). But wine remains my problem I'd say, I bloody love a good bottle of wine and find myself craving it most nights. Probably have 2 or 3 glasses 3 or 4 nights a week and normally a whole bottle of red on a Saturday night watching a film. I'm aware this is much more than I should drink, I spoke to a doctor yesterday about an unrelated issue and she was very disapproving (understandably) so I will be trying to cut down. Anyone know any good wine substitutes?? |

It doesn't help where I live, my wife and I have just spent the last 4 hours cafe hopping waiting for our car to be fixed, sitting outside and its still 20C and sunny, tried to be good and had a small coffee €2 then a 250ml lemon fanta €2 then a half litre of beer €2, Will be drinking a nice €2 bottle of red tonight, makes no sense not to drink! I definitely drink too much in the summer due to the heat and being by the pool , weekends will be noon until bed time

All about lifestyle isn't it. There's a few saying they don't drink much due to having young children etc, which is reassuring as it would be worrying to read how someone is necking half a dozen pints at lunchtime then picking up the kids from school, taking them to an after-school event and sitting in the car park sipping from a paper bag whilst waiting for them to finish. So, sure, if one leads a busy lifestyle with work and family life, alcohol isn't conducive to that. Retired and living in the sunshine I think I'd be with you. I haven't had alcohol of any sort for a few months but that was a deliberate check on myself which I will do from time to time if I think I'm over doing it. No need to wait until the January or October fads to be told to step away when it can be done any other time.

What's your relationship with alcohol these days? on 14:54 - Nov 29 with 1826 views | Swansea_Blue | Er, need to cut down really. 2-3 drinks a night is a bit of a habit, although I break it up - e.g. first 2 weeks of November I had nothing. It’s inversely proportional to whether I can get out to exercise. Get a run in and I’ll not fancy anything. Have a sht day at work with no exercise and I’m reaching for a few runs or open a bottle of wine. I’m well aware I need to break that cycle!

What's your relationship with alcohol these days? on 15:09 - Nov 29 with 1790 views | GlasgowBlue | I worked abroad in an industry that had a big drinking (and drug taking, although that never interested me) culture. Out of the office at 5 and in to the bars until closing time. Then off to a club until the early hours. A couple of hours Kip and repeat. When I moved to Scotland that culture carried on. When I turned 50 I decided to get super fit, started running and doing half marathons and knocked the booze on the head for three years. I’m a social drinker now. We enjoy socialising with other couples who all drink but we rarely drink in the house unless we are watching a film or chilling out. Never on a work night. Although during the first lockdown I was getting back into the habit of drinking every day (and night) but was determined not to get into the habit during lockdown two and three. Not drinking changed my tastes though. I cannot abide draught beer, only drink bottles, or wine without fizz, I used to be a bottle and a half a night Pinot Grigio before I gave up. Your post has actually coincided with me currently not drinking. I’d put on a few pounds and knock the booze on the head is an easy way to shed some lbs. Will probably start again the week before Christmas but not particularly bothered if I don’t. I’m not missing having the odd hangover tbh. [Post edited 29 Nov 2022 16:47]

What's your relationship with alcohol these days? on 12:26 - Nov 29 by clive_baker | I agree they do. I associate home games a little less with booze, I have a ST and it's generally a straight in and out on night games, and half the Saturday games. The other half we do tend to have a bit of a pub crawl and few pints pre match. I like an away day on the p1ss. London game, meet friends for breakfast, get to London late morning, 3 hours of pints then head to the ground. Few more during / after. |
....the other week, I got there on Saturday morning at about 11:15am and got back home at about 6pm Monday. Entirely booze related. I had to buy new pants and socks.

What's your relationship with alcohol these days? on 13:08 - Nov 29 by Pendejo | Not really been a heavy drinker, the odd big night or match day binge. Don't really drink at home very often, unless friends visit (very rare), and of the 5 games I've been to this season drove to 3, so no drinking, Charlton was a boozy day out. Also with a pint coming in at the cost of a 4 pack, my tight wad nature comes out. Plus my fav beer, Kronenbourg, is no longer served in 'spoons and rarely see it in pubs. |

What's your relationship with alcohol these days? on 16:10 - Nov 29 with 1632 views | RonFearonsHair | Fortunately I love the taste of beer so much I end up savouring it and drinking it very slowly. I usually open one at 6pm on a Friday, which admittedly often goes down relatively quickly, but it's often around midnight by the time I've made it through the third. Different story if I'm out socialising of course but even then four is probably my limit these days.

Used to have a thing for Penny but love is fickle. I glimpsed Michaela Strachan in Bristol City centre doing some shopping a while back. I never knew she was a local girl. I now brush my hair (what's left of it) and wear my best dentures when I go out nowadays. You never know.
