New Year's Honours (or absence of!) 10:16 - Dec 31 with 2284 viewsfarkenhell

Ian Botham (now Lord Botham), a middle-class sportsman from the South (West), walked from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise a shed load of publicity and money for Leukemia research, and was given a knighthood. Richly deserved for outstanding services to charity.

Kevin Sinfield, a working-class sportsman from the North, ran 7 ultra marathons in 7 days to raise a shed load of publicity and money for MND research. He received diddly squat in the New Year's Honours.

It's a disgrace. I'm not on Twitter, but perhaps someone might like to start a #KnighthoodforKev campaign?

In other news and the world of politics, MPs Chris Bryant, Julian Lewis and Alok Sharma are knighted. For, basically, doing the jobs they are paid to do.

Congratulations to Rachel Riley, who has been awarded the MBE for raising Holocaust awareness and combatting antisemitism. Much deserved.

Sinfield was appointed OBE (effectively one level down from a knighthood) in 2021, for services to Rugby and charity.

Botham was knighted for his cricket exploits as well as the fundraising.

I think people forget the committee dont just pick people, you have to be nominated for an award, so if you think Kevin Sinfield deserves one, nominate him

Sorry Glassers, I didn't spot your earlier post.

I don't begrudge the awards to other worthwhile recipients. It's the inequity of missing out Kevin Sinfield that has irritated me.

Sinfield deserved his OBE for his services to Rugby League. His herculean efforts this year for MND are worthy of a knighthood, in my opinion.

I'm coming round to your way of thinking.

As well as rewarding the successful, the privileged, the connected and the ass-lickers, it's a way of keeping the plebs in line. And its arbitrary nature makes a complete nonsense of the whole system.

Of course, I have no objection to military or civilian bravery medals because, so far as I am aware, they do tend to be awarded on merit.

I'll raise you this guy.

I've done lots of marathons and ultra marathons. I once did 2 in 8 days and it really took it out of me for weeks.

Doing one every day for a year is an enormous physical and mental achievement.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

It's an amazing feat but I am not convinced it's good for his long-term health.

Maybe I should have said military bravery medals for the lower ranks. Reading the article, there doesn't seem anything to justify his VC, apart from his high military rank and Eton education, with a little bit of war propaganda thrown in.

It’s a ‘meh’ on the honours system from me. But having said that, if anyone deserves more recognition it’s Kevin Sinfield. He comes across as a living angel - a heart the size of a planet. I expect he doesn’t expect or want the attention though.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?
