Tempo was the difference yesterday - how do we keep it against Plymouth 12:49 - Jan 8 with 2271 viewsunstableblue

As Mr Watson and Mr Warren stated on their excellent match summary - what was good about Town yesterday was tempo and some urgency to our play.

For me this was coming from 4 players who aren’t in the Town A Team currently

KVY
Jackson
Edmundson

And especially the MOTM Humphreys

Rotherham flooded the midfield but their press was a little weak.

But we made the game difficult for them. And whether from KVY and Edmundson breaking forward, or Humphreys adventurous supply, or the outlet Jackson gave and his penetration

We were a much better side for it. With Evans being much more forward with his passing and direction.

I do think this was a clear direction from McKenna.

And one we need to take into next weekend.

I do think Humphreys and KVY might add something to next weekend, but how do you drop Morsy or Donacien?

I felt Burns was fired up having watched Jackson do so well in his right wing berth.

Out Welsh wizard looked back to his very best when he came on.

Can’t wait for Saturday now - and as I keep saying - let’s really bring some noise to Portman Road!!

Bear in mind we may have new signings by then too. Do we start them, bench them…? Probably the latter.

I wouldn’t mind KVY starting ahead of Donacien, with the latter’s illness issues. Humphreys ahead of Morsy would be a big call and I can’t see it happening. I do not want to see Woolfenden and Edmundson partnering up at the back ever again; I think Woolfenden will return but would I be too concerned about an Edmundson-Burgess partnership? Not really.

Thought the main difference was playing a team which actually came to make a game of it rather than just frustrate us, which is a rare occurrence. Plymouth will similarly presumably come wanting three points next week.

Except Plymouth will still employ a far more effective press. I think the key difference was playing a team on poor form struggling to put out a fit squad.

"Rotherham flooded the midfield but their press was a little weak" is the key phrase from the OP. We have no control over how the opposition set up and how well they press.

If the OP is suggesting (I don't think it actually is) that the following play at a better tempo then it is wrong:

KVY vs Donacien
Jackson vs Burns
Edmondson (and Keogh) vs Burgess/Woolfenden
Humphreys vs Morsy

Those 4 players may have moved the ball at a higher tempo yesterday but they were enabled to by the time and space that Rotherham gave us. If they had closed down quicker then more of those attempted passes would be going astray.

True, Plymouth will be better than Rotherham were yesterday, but I think having a team which is wanting to play makes a huge difference to us and allows us to play a game at a higher tempo.

Not their natural game but, with the table as it is, surely there must be a chance that Plymouth would be happy with a draw and therefore might be a bit less 'adventurous'?

Agree that we're at our best when teams are attempting to play rather than play a low block. Reading up on the Bolton game, not sure how adventurous Plymouth are going to be next weekend, by all accounts they sat in and were relatively conservative. I wonder how much losing Whittaker will affect their approach and confidence, he was a big part of that team's momentum.

I doubt they'd be unhappy with a draw whatever their approach, although I doubt they'd try to emulate Lincoln. Their record on the road in the league is good but nothing like as good as their exceptional home record, won five, drawn six, lost two.

Not seen anything about the Bolton game, other than Joe Edwards getting sent off, so interesting to read they took that approach.

I may not be remembering correctly, but in the first fixture, didn't they defend deep and we out-played them for about 70 minutes. They then took the game by the scruff of the neck and turned it around in a 20 minute spell.

Having a browse of some reaction and seems like Bolton fans are very unhappy with some of Plymouth's time wasting tactics. Seem particularly riled by a Plymouth player going down with a leg injury before holding his head to get the ref to stop the game while Bolton were breaking away.

They had some funny results away earlier in the season but have done a bit better in recent weeks so perhaps, seeing as their home form is outstanding, they're happy to grab what they can on the road, particularly against other top teams.

They might be wary that a defeat could lead us back to being a point behind if we then win the game in hand against Morecambe which we should do, so there may become a time if the game's still level where they'll be happy enough with a draw.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Based on their home form , the loss of Whittaker , the way they played at Bolton yesterday and the points gap they have , it suits them them massively to play for a draw ….especially when playing away to top 6 sides.

Will have also seen how we struggle to break down teams who employ that tactic.

Anybody expecting a going ho approach is going to be very frustrated imo
