Are we going to just have a pot shot like they did?.......one decent shot put them completely in charge of the game, surely it wouldn't hurt if we gave it a go occasionally seeing as we are very good at getting the ball back WHEN we are on top!

It's got to be coaching.
On his debut. Clarke had an effort from Miles out which wasn't a bad effort.
Today we did get a freekick from it that Evans fluffed... but In the lead up... Clarke picked up the ball from deep, I was expecting him to take a shot as per his debut.. but he kept hold of it and tried something else..
Surely that's to do with coaching and not a player just deciding he no longer fancies taking a shot after 1 game. |

Yes I've seen that which shows only Oxford have shot more than outside the box and only 3 teams have scored more than us (and only by just 1 or 2).
So we're among the top sides in terms of taking shots and scoring from range, which is what I said. |  |

The thread is about not talking many shots outside the box. It's not my OP.
I'm clarifying what our actual stats are as one poster is seeing one aspect. Yet I'm looking at a different table on the same link so I'm just asking if I'm not looking at the correct table. | |

Unfortunately 1 of our biggest problems tends to be that we always try to score the perfect goal... We clearly have a blue print, where we hit the byline and cross low, or pull the ball back... Teams that park the bus will defend this reasonably well... I went yesterday and sat in the home end with my cousin and family and Knibbs looked a handy player..was a great strike for the goal.. really hit across it..
Also on a side note, was sat 4 rows from the touch line, where the players warmed up... Had a funny exchange with Jack Lankester... Shouted to him "you'll always be blue Jack, always be blue" he turned round and had a good smile! Good lad | | | |

Agreed. I would suggest we just have a pot shot the same day we stop playing the ball out from the back by playing across the back line a dozen times, pass it back to Walton ,who then just hoofs it up to 4ft 2in Chaplin and we lose the ball.

They were successful from 25% of them then...... our 7 were unmemorable as I can't remember a whole heap.... trouble is I suppose my opinion of what a shot is has a subjective element too, ie its got to look like a proper shot not just any old swing with the ball hardly travelling hard or far that statisticians would count..... I know what I mean co I can't really remember and of our efforts whistling towards their goal like the one that Knibbs produced to score though I did spot 4 opportunities on the edge of their box during 10 seconds in the first half...all of which we turned down.. ... | | | |

I'm not sure you can complain that we don't have a go / take enough pot shots and that the long shots we do take don't count because they're not threatening enough.

Indeed. It’s difficult enough (although we should be better at it) to get a decent cross in against a packed defence. Shooting from long-range with defenders in the way isn’t really much of an option. |
The thing is, you are asking the defence questions when you do that (crossing), a lot of the time they will have the answer, but some times they don't. We've scored a lot of goals from corners this year, the time when the defence is as packed as it will ever be, because it puts pressure on the defence and things happen.
Look at our first goal against Morecambe, was an alright delivery but the defence f'ed up and we scored. We just don't get enough players in the box, we much rather have everyone bar Freddy piss around with the ball 20 yards out. I was expecting a bit of a change from that with the arrival of Hirst and Broadhead but so far it hasn't really happened. | | | |
