How similar are Town to the Sunderland Team of 21/22? 13:09 - Feb 15 with 2069 viewsBlueDouglas

All the posts online about Town needing a change of manager got me thinking about the situation at Sunderland last season, who found themselves outside the automatic places after a few poor results. I felt at the time sacking Johnson seemed a bit rash, while they went up the play offs can be a bit of a lottery.

Lee Johnson appointed Dec 20, sacked Jan 22 with Sunderland 3rd in Div. 1
Kieran McKenna appointed Dec 21, Town have just slipped to 4th and in pretty bad form.

*Edit - just checked and Sunderland in 21/22 were on the same no. of points as Town were in 22/23 (54) when Lee Johnson was sacked.

Depends on the Owners attitude, how much of a long term view they are prepared to take.

Sacking KMc wouldn’t guarantee promotion although it might improve the chances, in the short term , of promotion via play offs.

In the medium to long term I’m sure KMc is a significantly better prospect than Johnson and will rightly earn a place in History as one of Ipswich’s great managers.

It’s pretty clear who’s pulling the strings at Sunderland. I’m not sure that’s true at Town. Who sacks McKenna? Ashton will be given the job, via O’Leary - but those three gurning yanks will be ‘in the loop’ in Phoenix and Tucson. Then there’s Schwarz ‘in Ohio’. The bloke with beard who sanctioned the purchase and turns up whilst on holiday…. And probably a few others - including ‘the now departed Marcus Evans’. That’s quite a chain of command for a third division football team.

Nonsense. It will be a decision driven by Ashton and he will be responsible to the board on whether he gets those calls right.

We are also performing like Sunderland did under Jack Ross (remember him?) when they drew umpteen games & stumbled into the play offs. Sunderland are now on their 5th manager in 3 1/2 years & are in the Championship play off zone. Sheffield Utd did something similar when in the 3rd tier. I'm not saying McKenna should be sacked now, but if we stumble into the play offs (or miss out, which is possible on current form) I don't see why we should persist with him. We were far too patient with Lambert (although that was under Evans).

I think there's a secret feeling among Town fans that we just need a manager like Sir Alf or Sir Bobby to march us up the divisions and all of a sudden we'll be playing at the top level and lifting trophies. But football isn't like that anymore and I hate to say it but we'll never have another manager as great as those two. Right now we just need a manager to get us out of this division, that's it.

"football isn't like that anymore" i.e. "with Robson and Ramsey to march us up the divisions"

It wasn't generally like that then.

When you say improving the chances of promotion do you mean like we did when we got Cook in as manager in March 2021?

You never know how a new manager is going to do. But Cook's "demolition man" approach was stupid & naive.

But based on hursts thoughts and echoed by those that followed things weren't great at PR and people spoke last night how much better the culture at the club is. If that's true then it started with PC ripping out the old and starting new.

a niche perspective

He managed to take us from 7th in the table when he took over to 11th at the end of the season!

It backfired but the strategy made sense - put a rocket up the players and hopefully scrape the playoffs

I can see both sides with McKenna: one the one hand I'd love him to be successful here for years to come, starting with promotion this season, or at a push, next season.

On the other hand, I would completely understand if the owners decided this awful run of form will either see us miss out on the POs completely, or give us very little chance of winning them, and a change of manager in the next couple of weeks is highly probable.

He's knows he's under immense pressure, he needs to get this teams confidence back and on a winning run asap, because I have a feeling that Ashton and the Americans will be mercyless.

It’s worth noting that they Sacked Johnson after a 6-0 defeat to Bolton. That change then saw them go in a run of L L D L D.

Actually it was turning a couple of draws into wins by scoring in injury time that kicked start their season.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over
