No, unfortunately not Ken. I did get asked to work on it over 20 years ago when I was working for the Cambridge Archaeological Unit. I turned um down and they never asked me again.... I would obviously have been better and clearly more photogenic then Baldrick or Francis feckin Prior

Just think you could have been on there wearing a TWTD shirt!!

of the 'experts' I do like Stewart Ainsworh, given my interest in old maps he has the gig I'd opt for

If you have RTE or TV3 you may see me on the news every now and then. (Usually when we accidentally hit skeletons)
I only spend about 10-20% of my time on site nowadays as I work as a archaeological consultant. So I tend to spend a lot of my time analysing old maps etc

Well I like Francis Pryor - and I can spell his name!

Did you ever come across James (Jim) Dyer. Probably a bit before your time.
He taught Pryor most of what He knows!

Oh, I'll have a rummage on RTE and look for news items about accidental bones finds!!

When you say " So I tend to spend a lot of my time analysing old maps etc" so you really mean 'sitting in a pub somewhere ..."?

No, sorry, never heard of James. I've worked in Ireland
for the last 20 odd years. Wouldn't hurt him to finish Francis Pryors education though

I did something for TG4, must be 20 years ago now. I think I'm heavily dubbed into Gaelic. May well be worth a watch if you have a interest in large Medieval graveyards.

I love the results of archaeology but don't think I'd like the back-breaking and boredom of digs themselves, so it would have to be the Stewart Ainsworth role for me too.

In reality most archaeology is the Stewart Ainsworth role. Excavation only really happens when your really unlucky or something as gone wrong in the process. Or on really large infrastructure projects like HS2 when they just gonna go in a straight-line and make no effort in avoiding the archaeology or anything else

I used to go on Quaternary Research Association field trips in East Anglia with Phil Harding. Funny guy, not the most forthcoming, which was a bit of a surprise as he comes across as being pretty gregarious on the programs. That’s not you is it?

My wife knows a fair few of the experts through work. But just checked and she doesn't know him.

Most archaeologists are socially awkward. No, that's definitely me. Helen Geake use to work in the SMR office in Bury St edmunds when I worked there a long while ago.

I meant whether you were literally him - I’d mind what I said then! 🤣

Archaeologists seem like a good bunch. I’m (was) more on the geomorphology side, but have a fair few friends who are still active in traditional archaeology and forensic work too, both in unis and consultancy. I used to map for them sometimes. If I had my time again it’s something I’d like to try more ‘properly’ rather than dabbling around the edges.

I was at University with a lad from Hadleigh who went on to run the archaeology dept at Bradford Uni and his mate who came up with geophysics gizmo. Although I was donkey jacket wearing sociologist I hung around with the archaeology mob as they liked a beer or two

My only contact with Phil Harding has been at Taunton during Somerset CCC matches.

Interesting… I spent 10 years as a pdoc geomorphologist looking at Holocene stuff. Worked on Newgrange at UCD for a few months. Best find was a 7.5k old bit of pottery from an alluvial fan section in Yunnan, china.. g

Cool, Newgrange would be interesting enough. I'm more interested in the Slightly earlier Carrowmore and Carrowkeel in the West of the country.

lest we forget that most ancient of sites, with the odd lack of atmosphere, where families regularly gather in groups to heap ritual humiliation on of sacrificial offerings dressed in gaudy clown like outfits and where the dust and cobwebs in the 'inner sanctum' leads researchers to believe nothing has ever been in there .... carrowroad
