TWTD Hive mind - International sim cards 11:49 - Feb 28 with 1066 viewsLord_Lucan

Dear all

Just found out that my wifes phone provider doesn't offer an international bolt on

Does anyone have any recommendations about international sim cards that can be used in S Africa and possibly Mozambique - for calls and data?

Just had a look on Amazon and they seem a bit iffy.

Buy a payg SIM when you are out there (assuming you are on a holiday). It tends to work out cheaper/easier.

...but do signatures really work?

I tried a Lebara sim for when I was in India and it didn't work at all and had no way of resolving it, so maybe avoid them.

A Three PAYG? I use them for the US, but haven’t looked for more civilized places….!

Just buy an MTN sim card locally - and pass on your new number to loved ones.

MTN cover most of Southern Africa.

Save the numbers she'll need on the phone (not on the SIM) and that should work a treat.

Use hotel wifi/whattsapp/messenger too.

I'm gonna get an Orange Holiday World Sim as I don't want to risk driving about looking for a phone shop - I'm not the sort of person who worries about anything generally but I'm actually quite nervous about the fact I have to drive all over S Africa, especially at the current time. World reports suggest they are one power cut away from civil war.

Might be a good opportunity, could see you as head of a coup.

Still a bit gutted I've never been in a country when there was a coup, especially as my kid bro' was in Equador when the locals overthrew a govt.

When he asked what was behind it all he was told "You know how in Europe, when unhappy with a govt you vote them out? Well here we just speed it up a bit"

I suppose if it were just me I'd probably not care so much and end up in some shanti town bar chewing grabba - but I'm with the Mrs so I have a duty of care.

When my Dad visited me in Canada, it was just easier and cheaper to get a temporary 1 month SIM. These services were provided with the airport arrival.

Just get an E-Sim and let it run alongside your current sim in your device. No hassle with multiple phones, sim cards etc.

Airalo is a good app for it. Log in, by the E-Sim, follow the instructions to set it up (about 90 seconds) and voila. I am in Vietnam now and just got a 1 week E-Sim for $3.50.
