Do we really need either? What does the monarch do that is of any real importance and cannot be done by some other more low key office holder?
We would undoubtedly opt for a Parliamentary republic model, where the head of state (whether called President or not) is a ceremonial figure, costing virtually nothing.

It is a thread, one that those at 'the top' fear being picked at
Once the populace begin to question today's buffoonery, they might then start to question what it represents, ie a country still constrained by privilege. That undoubtedly suits some. Those who see themselves as subservient, happy to do what they are told and never question anything. It also suits those who benefit from such forelock tugging.
Jug ears is well aware that the monarchy needs to become far less visible, lest people question what they are there when the country is supposed to be democracy, not some Ruritanian comic opera.
If ever the failure of brexit needed an example, today was just that. Those of the cap doffing right have been desperately trying to convince us it was all a success. 98% of the population supported the monarchy, 95% would either be part of the crowd gawping, or sat at home spell bound by the sheer spectacle of it all. Whereas the reality is one if indifference.
And despite a few desperate has beens singing, that is about it. Gormless folk now trudging home, soaked, deluding themselves they had been part of history. Whereas every passing day becomes history.
Society is no longer as violent as once before, but the metaphorical tumbrils are already rolling. The removal of much that is wrong in this country has been enacted by the people these few days. Through the ballot box and noticeably that indifference.
The real establishment who sought to benefit from having the country returned to an insular outpost (brexit) in which a grateful populace 'knew their place' has taken a huge blow. Just as with the 'Emperors new clothes' it was, and is, a con.
The people have spoken, and it is a case of 'far queue'. The age of deference may not be over, but it is certainly in retreat.

If we needed to give someone a role in monarchy I'd give Penny Mourdant one

He is your FK. As a subject, you have no choice in the matter. You pay your taxes to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. Your letters are delivered by Royal Mail. If you serve time it will be at His Majesty’s pressure. Any cash you spend will bear the Monarch’s image.
Saying NMFK is a pointless and futile gesture. He is your King.
