Not happy with Test squad 13:20 - May 16 with 2167 viewswoodbridge_blue

I see the England selectors have made the sad but inevitable decision to drop the best wicketkeeper in international cricket to accommodate Jonny Bairstow, whilst retaining Zak Crawley.

As a Surrey CCC member I'm obviously please to have Foakes back in County Cricket, but feel bad for him, as he has done nothing wrong.

Agrees, has JB played any cricket at all post injury yet?

Very little, a couple of innings for Yorkshire seconds and same for the Firsts, but as with the team itself, he has met with little success.

While Bairstow was in the form of his life last year, that was a long time ago & I think he needs to show a bit of form before displacing Foakes. He's averaging under 30 in 3 completed First Class innings for Yorkshire this season. I guess the fact he's a big mate of Stokes has helped. I doubt spin will play a big part in the Ashes so therefore Foakes's superior wicket keeping isn't considered a big enough factor, although a Test average of 32 shows he's no mug with the bat.

Also notice that Archer is out for the whole summer. Posted a while back that I’d heard he’s never play test cricket again, hopefully he does, big loss for the Ashes.

Very fast bowlers put such a strain on their bodies there's always the risk of doing long-term damage. Stokes is pretty much constantly crocked nowadays, Wood only available in brief bursts. The likes of Broad and Anderson (plus McGrath before them) achieved such longevity by trading pace for guile.

Thing is, Bairstow can open. Something quite important if, say, Crawley fails to score many.

Sad to see we've revisited the curse of the English wicketkeeper. You can be the best in the world, a fine batsman but fear of failure of those above you in the order means we sacrifice your excellence behind the stumps.
I've always thought it hands the opposition a psychological advantage - "they don't actually think they're good enough'

See also Jack Russell.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I dont think he will, i've said since the 2019 WC odi final, his injury, and the way it was handled through that tournament meant he'd never likely play test cricket again.

But we won so it was very much mission accomplished and he was integral to that success & victory, but the longer term outcome is his elbow likely won't stand up to 5 days worth of bowling possibly 40odd overs anymore.

Because its his elbow which generates the whippy power/force in his delivery, so you can't remodel the action, because that would slow his delivery, so it becomes all about managing the pain and that's nearly impossible for test cricket.

For t20 where he only needs to do 3 overs and not even in a spell, not a problem. Maybe even still ODI small impact spells are fine. But 10 overs per day in long spells, even if he could get through a game the way the series (especially the Ashes this summer) there's no rest/recovery for players even with minor niggles thesedays.

And to lesser extents, James Foster and Chris Read.

Foakes has served England really well since last summer and he couldn't really have done any more to keep his place. Will this mean Bairstow goes back to batting 7? Or Stokes 5 and Bairstow 6? I guess they are also hoping Bairstow can use the Ireland game to play himself back into some form as he hasn't pulled up any trees in CC Div 2 this season yet.

I'm tempted to say Crawley needs a good knock to keep his place for the Ashes but history tells me that isn't true.

Shame about Archer but it already seemed pretty inevitable. I would be amazed to see him play in a game longer than 20 overs from here on in.

Hmm..there has even been talk of Stokes opening the batting as he won't be fit to act as 4th seamer. Stokes being unable to bowl affects the balance of the side & this is partly why Bairstow has replaced Foakes, rather like when we would make Alec Stewart keep wicket at the expense of Jack Russell.

Wicketkeepers and to a lesser extent spin bowlers always suffer from this in England. Whether you can 'do a job' with the bat seems to take more precedence than being the best at your primary job.
Fast bowlers seem to have a free pass to be able to be rabbits, but spinners and keepers seem to have to have another string to their bow to get in.

I'd argue Stewart was a better 'keeper though, certainly later on in his career.

James Foster above I absolutely agree with, I think he was one of the best in the world as a 'keeper and wasn't actually a bad bat either.

The Batsman wicket keeper is very much an England thing and often wonder about the merits.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

I thought this was worth revisting. Bairstow scored 78 with the bat but has cost 61 runs (that's a stat I've regurgitated and haven't bothered to check...) and two wickets behind the stumps. Foakes must be fuming and justifiably so.
