Love the Purple Hearts but they have always escaped me.
I thought I had broken the spell about 15 years ago when a load of us went to watch them somewhere in London but Bossbeard completely screwed the timing up and we missed them.

The Paris Match Money Go Round You're The Best Thing Solid Bond In Your Heart
Solid bond was originally demoed by the jam. At one point it was pencilled in as their last single, but they went with beat surrender in the end. There is little difference in the two versions.

Foxton sacked Buckler a few years ago didn't he? Should be good all the same. Russell Hastings does a passable Weller.
I've seen FTJ several times since they first started touring. Always great gigs, but yes, the comments about overweight over 50s in Fred Perry is true. I'm proudly one of them! I've never found Russ to be a Weller wannabe. He always seems very comfortable in his own skin and doesn't try to be a Weller tribute act. Him and Foxton have also released new music over the years.

You're right but TSC version is a better production. I'm sure The Jam enthusiasts would have hated it too, considering the hate Weller got for forming TSC.

Yeah, Rick has always had a bad deal.
He's happy now in his garden making things out of wood.
He wrote a good autobiog as well.
Bruce basically done to Rick what Weller done to him, he has gone right down in my estimation.
This may or may not be true. I'm seem to recall it was something to do with the management of the band. Russ and Bruce wanted to change. Rick didn't and decided to leave. I don't think I've seen any bad blood in the press anywhere?

Not sure about this one mate, though I do think they were more adventurous as a band. I rarely reach for my SC records, but I do play the Jam more regularly. That said, the first 2 albums don't get much air time.

Continuing the Mod theme, the Who are one of my favourite bands.
Love The Who - although they were largely manufactured for the scene and not a genuine Mod band - but more a band liked by Mods. Keith Moon I would say was the only one with genuine Mod credentials - Ironically replaced by Kenny Jones from proper Mod Band The Small Faces.
Kenny Jones was also at Mods Mayday last year along with SA, The Chords, Squire (I think) etc.
Moving on a generation you could also make the same case re The Who and Small Faces with The Purple Hearts and The Chords, inasmuch that Purple Hearts were Mods but (although they might now claim otherwise) The Chords weren't - but fell into the scene and had a big Mod following - so basically a band like by power pop Mods.
IMHO of course.

I just did a quick experiment. Played Eton Rifles, sounded fine. Was gonna try an play something by style council as a comparison but just couldn't bring myself to do it..

I only saw the Style Council once at the Gaumont in Ipswich in early 1984, but I was there to see the support act, Billy Bragg, shortly after the release of his first album, and before he had become relatively well-known.

I never saw Style Council as I had the royal hump with Paul Weller
I did though see Mick Talbot in The Merton Parkas.

I guess to put it more succinctly, The Who were a band who became mods. The Small Faces were mods who became a band. There was a lot of cross over between the bands. Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane released an album together called Rough Mix. Kenny Jones, as mentioned, replaced Keith Moon and Ian Maclagan married Keith Moon's ex wife Kim. Both bands undertook an ill fated tour of New Zealand and Australia in 1968. To say they weren't well recieved is quite the understatement!

Brilliant, thanks for posting that. Never seen those pics of that Roundhouse gig.
Interesting that Joe Strummer in the interview equates the Ramones' impact with that of the Beatles, but they had virtually no commercial success.
Without them, there wouldn't have been punk, new wave, indie, thrash metal, hardcore etc. And even groups like the Specials and the Beat adopted some of the rhythms and attitudes of punk.
