Australian top five 18:42 - Jun 7 with 1235 views | gordon | Some serious batting averages - appreciate there's more to cricket than averages but still! Warner: 46 Khawaja: 48 Labuschagne :57 Smith: 60 Head: 48 *And obviously Harry Brook (82) makes these all look rubbish. [Post edited 7 Jun 2023 18:43]

Australian top five on 22:32 - Jun 7 with 1133 views | Chrisd | Yes, they look a very good top 5. My concern is that I just don’t see that we’ve got enough firepower to bowl them out. The decision of bringing Ali back I find a total farce. What message does that send out to the County bowlers? Ali’s bowling average is so poor against them too, that Aussie top 5 will be licking their lips to bring those averages up by the time this Ashes series finishes. [Post edited 7 Jun 2023 22:44]

Your take on Moeen is a minority one. It says to county bowlers that we havent got any decent spinners. As usual. Its a fair message.

Is it? I’d have a look at what a lot of ex professional cricketers are saying about this situation, I’m certainly not in the minority where this topic is concerned. We’ve got a young lad in Ahmed who is an attacking spinner, who can bat, we’ve also got Liam Dawson who’d be able to control an end and he also bats. Moeen retired for a reason. His bowling average against the Aussies is 64.65!! Really think this is a backward step by England, like many others. [Post edited 8 Jun 2023 6:36]

Agree with all of that. IMO sends out the wrong message, especially to Ahmed, & what happens if Moeen struggles or even decides to retire again mid-series? I hope he proves me wrong, but just got a bad feeling about it, especially given that Stokes is unlikely to be able to bowl much himself, if at all, which will put even more pressure on Jimmy, Broad & Robinson.

A very young attacking spinner, in an Ashes match where we will want to tie down an end given the absence of fit all rounders? Aussies will likely ruin him for life. Dawson is the only other realistic option.
