You are an England Test Selector, what your team for the next test? on 21:43 - Jul 9 by Keno

Ali was very much a batsman who bowled a bit, but has morphed in a bit of a bowler who bats a bit

Yes, Moeen Ali started his Test career as a batsman who could bowl a bit, batting at #6. England often wouldn't play a full time spinner in home Tests so after Moeen did quite well with the ball in England, he became our senior spin bowler by default. His Test & First Class bowling averages are both around 37.
The problem England have is the lack of a proper #3. Brook looks ill suited to the role, so should bat at 5. There are no obvious candidates so getting Moeen to fill the role is a possibility, given that his spin bowling is also useful.

Ali averages nearly 30 with the bat at test level. He's not a number three and nobody would suggest that would be a permanent home for him, but to suggest he's not even a test number 8 is ridiculous. A lot of Beard haters on this thread. He's come back in at the last minute after a long spell out and he picked up a couple of important wickets at Headingley. For me we look unbalanced without a spinner and whilst Root is fine for a few overs, he's not a genuine bowler and can't be expected to be our main spinner.

Ali's batting average is propped up by his early career. He has not averaged above 20 in tests for a calendar year since 2017.

Woakes is a superior batsman and should be ahead of him in the order.

Woakes is very good with the bat, good enough that he's practically an all rounder, imo. Ali's test career has been pretty intermittent over the last few years so not sure cherry picking the last few years as being representative is very fair. He is decent with bat and ball, and gets a lot more criticism than he deserves, imo. Saying he's not a test number 8 batsman is just plain daft.

I disagree that judging someone over a 6 year period is cherry picking. I'd say that's long enough to be fairly reflective of where he is now.

I do agree that saying he is not a number 8 is unfair. He is a number 8. He now averages between 15 and 20, which puts him in the "bowler who can hold a bat" group with people like Broad and Wood, but above the "bowler who can't really bat" group like Anderson and Leach, and below the "bowling all-rounders" group like Woakes or Sam Curran.

The problem is, there is still a perception that he is an all-rounder or even someone who could merit a place in the team on batting alone. He isn't and hasn't been for a long time. Which means, he needs to justify a place in the team on bowling alone.

Of course this wouldnt be a discussion if Leach was fit

But then I suspect we would be discussing whether Leach should play in the next text as a spinner

I'd also argue that when Moeen was promoted to no.3 yesterday, it was in more of a old style pinch hitting role where him getting out early was not unexpected and any time at the crease would've been a bonus.

His role has evolved over the years. He was a batsman who can bowl and indeed opened for England on a tour to Pakistan (UAE). He also scored a ton early on in his career in which was largely, a backs to the wall effort to try and save a test.

Madness. I get it's hard to balance the team, with or without Foakes, at the minute but we've already seen Barstow's drops costing us a huge amount of runs this series, seems crazy to let that continue.

Not sure what Duckett's done to be excluded from your team. Test average of 45 as an opener and scores of 182, 98 and 83 in his past 4 tests.

My team as follows.

Crawley retained for lack of any other options. Revisit his position after the series. Dropping Ali as he is poor as both bowler and batsman. Spin has barely featured in the series and Australia without Lyon, so would have not advantage in us not playing a front-line spinner. Moving Root to #3 as he can play there and it helps to fit in our powerful middle order. Bairstow retained as a pure batsman with Foakes taking the gloves. Woakes and Wood both did enough to be retained. Broad has been our most consistent bowler throughout the series. Anderson given the test as a swansong (last Old Trafford Ashes for him).

Duckett
Crawley
Root
Brook
Bairstow
Stokes
Foakes
Woakes
Wood
Broad
Anderson

Perfect.

Batting quite nicely today. Done what you want from a stand in number 3, scored some handy runs, got some overs into the bowlers' legs, taken some of the newness out of the ball. Even if he goes now, that's a good stint from him.
