Social workers, police, healthcare pros, content moderators, on 13:10 - Jul 10 with 1213 views | Coastalblue | Ms Coastal is a social worker, was front line Child Protection in London for five years, there's absolutely no was in the world I could have done what she did, quite aside form the ridiculous hours she used to work under immense pressure I expect I'd have ended up inside dealing with some of the people and things she did. She's no longer frontline CP but still works silly hours under huge pressure for little reward, as you say, hats off to all of these people.

I'd say pass on my appreciation to Mrs Costal, but thats probably inappropriate. I wonder if you almost have to have a high form of self-mind control to handle such info, as in a real ability to switch off form one train of thought to another. Sounds simple in theory, but in practice, if I mention a pink elephant, most people picture a pink elephant.

You definitely have to have a high degree of emotional resilience for sure. I was partly being glib with the alcohol comment but sometimes after an especially tough week a few drinks on a Friday evening to put a full stop on the week definitely helped. When you're doing the job there are times where you just subconsciously go into performance mode and don't let your feelings in, otherwise you just wouldn't manage. It's then what you do with all that afterwards that matters, a lot of people either burnout emotionally or become very detached, neither of which are good. None of the professions you mention have a very long life span for that reason.

I can well believe that. Interesting that detachment won't help for long too. Take care of yourself as much as possible (sounds silly, but genuinely) and thanks.

Not all obviously, as some incidents hit home in a way that absolutely knocks the stuffing out of you.. but ultimately in all those professions you’ve listed there is very much a mindset of ‘just carry on’ as there is limited (if any) support from senior management

that last line is just incredible (I'm guessing many of the top brass would have started off doing the job themselves, so must know what its like).

I don't know any paramedics in the UK that have reached retirement age, still in the job. I do know of several that have taken their own lives, which is a tragic statistic (I don't know the true statistics). The retirement age in the UK is 66 (soon to be 67), which is ridiculous for such a high stress job. [Post edited 10 Jul 2023 14:03]

Retirement age for police, fire and ambulance is 60 over here. 57 if your length of service plus your age is 85 or more.

Social workers, police, healthcare pros, content moderators, on 15:15 - Jul 10 with 950 views | DanTheMan | Some people don't. My wife found it very tough to deal with some days when she worked as a mental health worker for people with severe conditions. One of the only jobs where getting screamed at and called every name under the sun is part of the job. Then you have to deal with suicide attempts and other forms of self-harm which are obviously not easy. You too could get a job like this with no qualifications and little training where you get paid minimum wage and work really long shifts and unsociable hours.

She's doing fine, she's a tough cookie so whilst it drained her severely, especially over COVID, she came out of it OK. She did it to get experience in that area as she's looking to become a clinical psychologist.
