"Only" preseason, but surely his ability to find the net is encouraging for the coming campaign

Think I'm right in saying he finished last season with the 2nd best 'goals per 90' record in the league (McGoldrick 1st). A striker you forget at your peril.

Which considering his start is crazy. What was it? 0 in his first 9?

Think it was and he should have got 9 in the away match at Plymouth really, the man found his groove when competition arrived.

Freddie improved massively when we signed Hirst.

My stock line on here last season was:

"There is no finer striker in League One than Freddie Ladapo when his place is under threat."

Which was tongue-in-cheek, obviously, but it raises a question:

Did he raise his levels because of the competition?

Or because he benefitted from strategic game time rather than being flogged?

Could be either, or a bit of both, but, either way, I am glad we have him at ITFC and equally glad that we have Hirst, because that means we have two very good Centre Forwards.

I think it is more that it took time for him to settle. His improvement was consistent. Many were saying he shouldn't be dropped when Hirst arrived because his preceding form was strong. But I think not being the only genuine option meant he could go at it for 30 or 60 mins, rather than pacing over 90 mins.

It’s a strange one. Prior to Hirst’s arrival I thought Freddie’s contributions from the bench were pretty poor. Not the kind of striker we should be bringing on chasing a game. I guess post Hirst we were never really chasing games so it was all comfortable when he can on. I think he benefitted really well from the fact that Hirst pulled defences apart so much and almost set it up for Freddie’s arrival. He never once looked like the sulking type when he came on - contrary to the views of Rotherham fans. Always played and celebrated with the team with a huge smile on his face.

I guess that’s not a conclusive answer but I’m very happy to have Freddie and I think the pressure is off him with Hirst around.

Most goals in L1 last year as a substitute (8), so there’s something in that.

I like Freddie and think we looked better at many times last season when he was in the team. His goal record was good, but the sitters he missed is what people tend to focus on (me included lol). He’s a valuable player though and def has a role to play this season.

I think technically Hirst is the better player but he was guilty of missing some absolute sitters as well. His seemed to receive much less comment than Freddie's though

I’m not sure about that - there was a lot of doubt about Birst when he arrived, and during his slow start. Happy to hold my hands up and say I didn’t think he was the answer to our lack of ruthlessness in front of goal. Boy did he score some BIG goals!

He looks like he’s a good character to have around. He is an experienced pro and has promotions to his name. Last season, not only did he have to carry the front line for significant chunks of the season but he scored goals too. Admittedly, compared with GH, he looked less of a natural fit as a starter when we changed our game with introduction of Broady with Chaplin and Burns but he later shared the minutes and still scored from the bench. He was also basically fit all season.

Not sure what’s not to like as a striker in the rotation mix as we aim to step up and then thrive. Next summer we might be looking at different profiles but he’s a big part of the squad as things stand.

If his performance is anything like it was for us in the second half of last season and he serves up hot like that from the get go in the forthcoming season I reckon he will do us proud :)

For anyone interested in how our two up top compared last season:

Hirst: 6 goals, 4.35 'expected goals', 25% shot conversion rate, 42% shot accuracy, 0.49 goals per 90', 0.65 goals+assists per 90'.

Ladapo: 17 goals, 12.88 'expected goals', 25% shot conversion rate, 65% shot accuracy, 0.7 goals per 90', 0.75 goals+assists per 90'.

These stats speak to why during their time together I had more faith in Freddie in front of goal. The majority of Hirst's shots being off target chimes with what I witnessed lol and Freddie's stats will have improved significantly after their double-act began (having started the season poorly).

No suggestion they should reverse roles next season and every chance Hirst's consistency improves with a pre-season and permanent deal under his belt.
