Snowdon you'll be fine. Last time I went there was a huge queue at the bottom of the Pyg Track/Miners Path. So you may not even make it onto the mountain.

Was part of a 24 Peaks challenge I did 14 years ago. Wasn’t too bad, but was just part of many we did in bad weather. Was in Langdale last week, quite a few were walking in from there, up Bow Fell & across. Just wish that area had better weather as it’s amazing. I had one decent day in seven.

It's a big day from Langdale. I've done lots of fell races and time in the peaks, lakes and Cairngorms. I love the British hills. I did the Pennine Way in June and it was a truly incredible experience. 270 miles of peace and quiet.

Take a water filter if you do it from Langdale and lots of food. Stick the route on a gps device if you have one. Always take a whistle and space blanket as a minimum.

I'm doing the marathon up Scafell next month as a training run for a mountain marathon in Colorado in September.

Thanks for all of the replies. I’m pretty fit for my age. I’m an experienced middle/long distance runner but my knees have gone and I really feel it with inclines. I’ve done a few munros and Scafell Pike seems a similar height to Ben Lomond.

My Mrs is getting into climbing and is dragging me along with her. In reality, I’d just run and leave the climbing/hiking alone for the sake of my knees. Going away for a weekend used to be eating, drinking and sightseeing, but as we are getting older we seem to be getting more active. She’s gone and booked a weekend in a snowdon next month since my op.

Appreciate that this might be a bit late now. But please consider walking poles… it sounds like you’ve probably got them if your knees are bust, but if not, an absolute game changer. Will take a lot of pressure off of your joints.

I’ll admit, I thought they were for pensioners or Nordic types but I used them on a few climbs in Central Asia and never looked back.

I'd strongly suggest putting the OS Maps app on your phone for this. If you happen to end up on the summit in low visibility, using a gps mapping solution to verify that you are coming off on the path you think you are, may save you a lot of pain. There are numerous routes off Scafell Pike, so make sure you're comfortable with your navigation.

If you're going from Seathwaite, its a long but nice walk. As others have mentioned, from Langdale, its a long day. Wasdale provides the shortest but steepest ascent

If you like a little scramble, the Corridor route can be fun, but its also avoidable if you'd prefer gentler ground.

The top of Scafell PIke is a boulder field though, so be aware. You also have to drop down and re-ascend, which is frustrating, so be prepared for that.

have fun!

I only do dog-walking rather than anything serious like peaks, but as my knees now seem to be starting to go & the pain in one sometines stops me sleeping, really appreciate the tip re poles, thanks 👍

Also SaleAway for the tip re OS maps app, cheers 👍

Just to back this point up, and to emphasise the poles in plural, I had much the same attitude before a couple of falls and more or less use poles on doctors orders now. She got over my reticence by reminding me that, having been to New Zealand, I should have noticed that all the young guys who guide walk down there use poles. It is for balance regulation and leaves you feeling less tired at the end of the day, that is why you need two - they are not so much a support as a way of keeping your body shape correct and upright, to be used as a constant reminder on posture rather than a walking stick or a crutch.

On Glasser's issue with knee problems I find that I am, as usual, in the opposite camp. I gave up distance running after my first half-marathon because my knees couldn't take running so far on tarmac. Ever since I have delighted in the relief my legs get on rough but softer ground. But physiognomy can't be generalised about. In my occasional role as a Mountain Bothy Maintenance Organiser I had a meeting after a five hour walk out with a very accomplished Area Organiser at a bothy that needed a new roof. He had done the walk earlier and was still recovering, as an ex-paratrooper he had long standing issues (yep, there's an obvious joke in there) with his knees. So pacifist me had an interesting task to find a shorter and more even route back to the car park, it went well for most of the way but the steep descent at the end was not welcomed and I think it took him the rest of the weekend to recover. It's difficult to appreciate other's problems when you have decent mobility but the old adage about knowing your own limits also apples to knowing the limits of the people in your team and taking due responsibility for them.

Back from Scafell, climbed on Monday and must say it was a lot tougher than Snowdon.

Did the Seathwaite/Borrowdale Corridor route it was well over 6 hours and some parts it was more like a climb than a walk. Very lucky with the weather but take a few layers. This mountain is basically rocks so you are constantly looking where you put your feet jumping between rocks and big boulders.

Im knocking on a bit so it was a challenge. If Snowdon is 5/10 then this is def an 8/10. And coming down seems to take forever if you do the loop route.

Enjoy.

That’s the route I took a few years ago. Quite a bit of rough stuff and boulders at the top. As someone else said, poles are a godsend after a certain point in life! I thought I was a worse getting a couple, after struggling on declines for a couple of years these have changed things completely. Wouldn’t be without them now.

Anyways, how did you get on Glassers?

It was all a bit of a drama I'm afraid. Mostly down to poor planning by myself and the wife.

We were staying in Grasmere and the night before asked reception how long it would take to get to Scafell Pike by car, to which the answer was 40 minutes.

Got in the car and put the satnav on for Wasdale and it said 1 hour and 45 minutes. My mrs wasn't having that so I put in Scafell Pike and got 50 minutes. So we set off.

We went up this single track road with no sign of life for miles and thick fog. Eventually we got to where Scafell Pike should be but the rain was so heavy and the fog dso thick, we couldn't see a thing.

We carried on driving, now nearly two hours in and eventually saw a sign for Wasdale. Stopped at the Sawmill cafe and asked for directions and eventually got to the car park by Scafell. Found a hotel with a gift shop which showed a map of the route and set off on our hike.

40 minutes in and I'm thinking that this isn't very steep. Carried on a bit longer and thought this can't be Scafell so turned back. Another hour a half wasted.

Spoke to somebody at the gift shop who said that we had taken the wrong direction and pointed us in the right way.

Soooooo. Long story short, we got about two thirds the way up Scafell, couldn't see a foot in front of us and the weather was getting worse rather than better. We had a restaurant appointment that evening which we wouldn't have made so turned around and walked down.

Very disappointing tbh. Thought it was poorly signed compared with places like Ben Nevis or Ben Lomond.

We are back in the Lake District next April so will try again.,

Wow, what Satnav do you have?

Some of my puppy's socialisation classes have been in strange locations - a residential city street, a particular carpark at a country park within a town, a dogpark, a rural field etc.

Not having satnav, I selected the journey from home in googlemaps - you can see photos of how turnings etc appear in reality - sent directions to my phone, selected 'start' for the audio read-out whilst travelling, and the directions were 100% spot on to the inch every time. Recommended!

We found there are no signs at all, the piles of rocks you see on the way are waypoints but that is it. We had a route for going up but made a few wrong turns coming back down.

You made the right decision to turn back, no point in doing it if you can't see the views.

Def going back to the Lakes soon, but won't do Scafell again, that is def ticked off. Ben Nevis next year.

Need to be way more organised next time! I print off sections of my climbs/hikes/scrambles & laminate them. Priceless in the rain & wind. I also bought some poles & used one pole when I was in Langdale last month, found it better than two. Don’t think I’d even attempt Scafell Pike in that kind of weather, you really do need some serious skills to find your way around. On our 24 Peaks challenge, the weather was foul, but we had a leader with GPS satellite equipment. Physically I think we all felt up & down Great Gable was particularly difficult. The area just lures you back in hope of a fine few days weather!

I use gpx on my Garmin. I wouldn't go close to the fells without it unless you are in a proper group with a leader who knows what they are doing.

I did the corridor route up Scafell a few weeks ago from Seathwaite during this mountain marathon. It's an amazing route but is exposed and requires a bit of grade one scrambling.

As others have said, Scafell Pikes last half a mile is just a giant rock field. It is annoying in clear weather but down right treacherous in the wet or fog.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

With forty two of the Wainwright fells (four of them twice) and thirty three Munros (again four of them twice and one three times) under my belt I thought I should put a recommendation for map and compass in here. I have never used GPS and do not intend to as it is better to know what you are walking through as well as along. The compass rarely gets used and I should refresh my taking a back bearing and so on expertise (which was never much good), the whistle that is always on the same lanyard as the compass and the emergency blanket have never been used in forty years but they almost always accompany me. Sometimes I find myself without an ordnance survey map for an area and set off on the strength of a guide book description but I try not to do that, although if I am searching out a bothy there is a map available online so long as you are within a signal area (that doesn't have to be mobile telephone.)

I always, without fail, check the weather report first thing in the morning - and maybe later if the conditions look doubtful. Never set off in bad weather conditions, you risk wasting the time of Mountain Rescue and them getting a call out in weather they would rather not be called out in. Also, walking in foul weather is no fun.
