'At least'. Something's going to have to give re. squad places isn't it? Be interesting, but think there might be 1 or 2 senior players moving out later in the window too.

Evans? Donacien? Aluko? Ladapo?

Who we signing? I would say a central defender is the obvious one, with Burgess dropping out. A right back possibly to compete with Clarke. Forward perhaps too, which might spell the end for Freddie.

Interesting few weeks ahead. UTT.

I think the club have to continue being 'relentless' in their pursuit to improve the squad. Whether that means being ruthless with the likes of Evans, Jackson, Edmundson, Aluko and maybe even Ball, then so be it. We shouldn't be signing players for cover, but players that will push and compete alongside existing mainstays in the team like Morsy, Chaplin et al.

It depends - I wouldn't' be surprised if the focus here is premier league loanees under the age threshold

Loan players count towards the squad number no matter their age. They're only discounted if signed permanently.

My guess is that two of the following will leave (loan or permanent) before the window closes:

Edmundson
Leigh
Evans
Jackson
Ladapo

I suppose the interesting thing is whether McKenna or Ashton has had discussions with any of the players likely to be affected.

Or is it just a case that that would affect their morale in pre-season, so better to let them wonder or know when someone is signed?

There's no age threshold for Premier League loanees; all loanees count towards the 25 man squad regardless of age (Hutchinson takes a spot in the 25). If we sign players under the age threshold permanently (as we did with Slicker to free up another space in the 25), they won't count towards the 25.

Massive no-no to leave injured players off your squad list.

depends how long the recovery from injury is predicted to take. Last season we carried Camara all season. If said player is likely to be unavailable before November it t could make sense to get a half season loan in their place.

Poll: would you rather

Ashton on players going - “But we will assess that as each individual player comes in".

Players aren't silly though. When the CEO is talking about a few new additions, it doesn't take too much working out to figure who is most at danger of being surplus to requirements.

That's certainly true, and I suppose is a constant feature for footballers who are on the fringe.

On the other hand, if they intend to keep people thought vulnerable (Edwards, Jackson), perhaps they will have told them.

Only situation we'd even consider doing it is if the player was surplus to requirements full stop. Otherwise it's a hugely toxic thing to do to a player.

We don’t need 46 games out of him. Or anybody apart from Morsy. Hence the 25 man squad. 20 games from Fridge would be fine.

Nah, not having that. Who wants to build a squad and promotion campaign around those kinds of players? As good a bloke as he seems, he'll be off soon if we're being ruthless.

Yesterday he looked really shaky and indecisive. That ankle is also still a big issue, to the point that I think it may plague the rest of his career. Ankle issues are a disaster for a guy of his stature/build.

Is Humphreys part of the 25 man squad? Is it likely that a spot is made available through him being loaned out this season? I don't see him gaining a lot of game time this season with the current midfield options?

You don't have to register U21s that you own to put them in the matchday squad, so neither Humphreys nor Baggott would need to be registered.

(Basically because otherwise you could never promote an academy player in season)
