No interest in doing what is right, only concerned with trying to bag a couple of extra seats at the next GE. Never mind that the world is on fire, let's row back on things that tackle emissions and roll it into the culture wars to try and pick up a few more votes. What an abject little turd he is.

This. It’s all very easy to attack car ownership from a London-centric view but in areas like mine there is no alternative. More frequent buses would just be driving round empty burning fuel. Electric cars whilst they still have a lifecycle carbon impact will greatly improve things (and I say that as a petrol head) but the infrastructure needs much improvement.

Things like shipping have a huge carbon impact but no near term replacement, so essentially we need to buy less Sh1t. When you see vegetables in the supermarket that have been imported as far as Thailand, that’s frankly ridiculous.

It's not a London centric viewpoint though. I don't live in London and I get pretty much everywhere on foot or via public transport. If you live in an urban area you are generally either close enough to amenities to walk many places or you will have access to public transport. 84% of the population of the UK lives in urban areas, so going car free isn't just for the London elite. And if we genuinely prioritised the environment then the fact that rural buses - which could be electric, they don't have to burn fuel - wouldn't be full wouldn't really matter.

Ultimately, we need more creative solutions than replacing hugely polluting things like cars with alternatives that are slightly better but still require huge amounts of natural resources and still create significant emissions. People can't have it both ways, we can't want to avoid a climate disaster whilst simultaneously being unwilling to make any changes to our lifestyle. It's not going to happen. And car ownership and moving away from it as the norm is one of the things that would have a big impact.

I would have thought that residents in LTNs are favourable towards them unless they prefer their roads being used as rat runs, and their children being scared to step outside their front door.

But the whole point of what Sunak is saying is really designed to fire up people throughout the country who are not in areas where LTNs are even an issue.

For reasons I can't fathom (and I am a motorist myself), so-called attacks on the motorist really get a lot of people going.

I believe the residents in Borrowdale Ave were overwhelmingly in favour of it, to stop the rat running situation, the local politicians werent, so nothing will happen, for now, but they might find it very hard to convince those residents with the claim they are pro the environment in the next elections.

It's certainly difficult to notice any improvement on my occasional journeys northward through the Dartford Tunnel, whether midweek or at weekends. Perhaps WFH has mainly had an effect on people commuting by train, or merely shifted car journeys nearer to home. And there appears to be no fall in flying if the headlines from this are anything to go by: the article itself may be paywalled.

https://www.ft.com/content/bf5d9815-2251-4739-b9f1-1838e30fc981

And this from the article is interesting.

IAG said “very strong leisure demand” across all its airlines and cabins had offset a slower recovery for corporate travel and that it believed customers had “prioritised holidays and visiting friends and relatives”.

Interesting, I do feel it’s back to BAU post pandemic- working from the office, lots of flying for business etc. I didn’t think I’d ever go back to doing many flights for work.

On topic Sunak has agreed 100’s more licences for North Sea E&P:

If you see the US, the vehicle owners are now seen as part of the culture war - like Guns, they have been told and now fear that the Democrats want to take their cars away.

You only have to look at the weirdness around the 15 minute cities (which would be great) to see how this is being packaged up.

Personally, I think it's next to impossible for someone who doesn't live very centrally ina city to survive without a car - I need one for work, but just generally nearly anything we do is over a mile away and whilst we walk a lot of places you just couldn't replace that with public transport, especially at it's current costs

Interesting to see that he has combined this announcement with investment in the unknown technology of carbon capture, which tarts things up, but may not come to anything.

I suppose this development puts Labour in a bit of a spot given their opposition to new licences.

I might add that my understanding (from speaking to a friend originally from Aberdeen) is that their announcement a couple of months ago went down like a lead balloon in the many areas of Scotland where oil and gas is still a major part of the economy.

Combined with other issues where Labour nationally have been more timid than Scottish Labour, maybe this points to Labour not doing as well as one might have thought given present SNP difficulties.

Is this the right word?

Not sure if he has any principles to abandon though. In fact as far as the environment goes it is clear that he couldn't give a toss, so I take it back it's not the right word.

Yeah, it's a way to look green without actually doing anything. Not a surprise to see Shell involved here, fossil fuel companies are obsessed with carbon capture for apparent reasons.

Most of them (Carbon Capture projects) don't work so well.

Its pretty clear that Sunak is not someone who takes climate seriously.

That is terrifying for a PM in 2023.

I don't think he takes the economy seriously either, or indeed running the country. This is what happens when you have people in charge whose wealth and privilege completely insulates them against life's hardships, people like Sunak can afford to treat government as little more than a game of power and strategy.

It's a bit like hydrogen for heating, which sounded good, and which the Government has recently abandoned, after ignoring earlier warnings. And surprise, surprise, the oil and gas companies supplied the fuel (blue hydrogen), which goes some way to show why it got legs.

i think we can now look forward to an election in which the tories try run on the the themes of reigning in the courts who have meant that the boats haven't been stopped, and standing up for drivers who want to drive where ever they choose and burn as much petrol as they like. in sunak's dreams there be lots of just stop oil activity to provide an enemy to rail against. and climate change experts to belittle. the message will be that we can be serious about climate change without doing anything about it.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Don't forget the whole gamut of culture war issues. And my feeling is that something on inheritance tax will be pulled out of the hat nearer the election, which will be extremely popular even though virtually no one pays it.

Inheritance tax over a certain level should be significantly higher, imo, but I recognise that puts me in the minority. This is yet another example of why winner takes all FPTP democracy is bad for the country. It creates a situation where political parties are willing to do things they know will be actively bad for the country (indeed, for the planet in some instances) in order to win a large enough minority share of the vote to stay in power. It's toxic and makes it almost impossible to achieve any kind of long term goal as a country.

Yep, always campaigning rather than governing.

Depending on one’s individual circumstances and if you get to use all the allowances and it involves moderately-priced and upwards property, the threshold can be ridiculously high. Up around £1 million. Although it can also be just the base level of £325k.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them increase the threshold purely for campaigning reasons so they can say they’re low tax, even though they’re the highest tax govt we’ve had in the post war era.

raising the threshold and increasing the rate could be widely popular. the trouble you have is persuading 95% of the population that a rise in the rate won't affect them.

For parents passing on the family home to surviving children, the limit is effectively £1 million for houses worth over £350,000 (or £650,000 plus the value of the family home if less than £350,000), subject of course to clawback for things like lifetime gifts.

And whilst this limit might be an issue for some in the south east, its increase or removal will be equally popular in areas without such high prices.

It's a bit like the top rate of tax which is made out to be an issue for people who will never i their lifetime pay it.
