Trumpland madness continues

The judge literally said please refrain from commenting on the case

And on an earlier post he repeated that the election was a fraud!

For now.

What strengthens it though to bring in the more traditional GOP voter?

Another indictment which shows he tried to overthrow an election in Georgia?

The middling Republicans want a ‘sane’ candidate to put America first. Not a sociopath to put Trump first. But while Trump has a cult like grip over the elected GOP, it is very difficult for anything else than Trump to appear on the ballot in 2024.

I tend to mostly agree with you, as do a lot of Conservatives who think Trump will win the nominee but not the presidency. One caveat though, is a year is a hell of a long time in politics and I think some of you from afar maybe slightly downplaying how bad Biden is fairing at the moment. I expect a huge turnout in 2024 and there is an element of risk to making him this relevant again, you check one box or the other over here at the end of the day and with the electoral college anything can happen.

I think he's probably got a very strange idea of what "happy" is. Where adulation replaces affection and triumphalism is a substitue for joy. I suspect money has always got in the way of him having real friends. If you notice, he never smiles much, except when he's goading crowds to chant his slogans.

Narcissists never smile in case they crack their shells. Sad. So, so sad.

See my response to EG in terms of the 2024 cycle but there is a wider narrative out there that is more Conservative mainstream than just his base. Being that the Democrats haven’t always been held accountable themselves.

I’m not suggesting any of the charges or possible charges are apples for apples of course but Trump was apparently dissuaded not to go after Hilary when he was in office because it would lead to impeachment and tit for tat back and forth. Now I think the gloves are off to a certain extent moving forwards and it will likely become rather exhausting part of US politics whoever is in power.

It all began with Newt Gingrich and the attempts to get Clinton. The only recent US President to albeit temporarily unite most, but not all the nation, thank you Dixie Chicks, was GW Bush and his ill fated invasion of Iraq.

My two American cousins (both well educated) have voted for Trump, even though they are more traditional Republicans, and suggested to me they did so holding their noses.

However, a Christmas card from one of them recently indicated deep disgust at the country under Biden, which makes they think they will carry on doing so.

The recent polls indicate Biden and Trump level, which is bad news for the Democrats because according to someone I heard on the radio today Trump could win a landslide in the electoral college even if 4 per cent behind in the popular vote.

I suppose the other factor is that Biden was regarded as a safe pair of hands when he got elected, but he is looking less and less like that as he ages, which to my mind may have an effect on his vote.

I'm glad to say my other American cousin is a Democrat.

Despite all the negativity and concerns about Biden's poll ratings, Democrats are outperforming in special elections. The candidates supported by Trump did spectacularly badly in 2022.

That may be well true but according to the New York Times an average of multiple recent polls by the website FiveThirtyEight puts Mr. Biden’s approval at 41.2 percent, lower than every president at this stage of their term in the last three-quarters of a century other than Jimmy Carter, who went on to lose his bid for a second term.

And it must not be forgotten that Biden evicted Trump from the White House by stitching together narrow margins of victory in a handful of states despite winning the popular vote by nearly 7 million. Just 44,000 votes in Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin separated Biden and Trump from a 269-269 Electoral College tie, which likely would have meant Trump's re-election.

I am no expert and don't live in the States but I think the legal proceedings against Trump have played into his hands, with the result that he is on the up, whereas Biden is holding water at best.

So if I were a betting man, I would think Trump would win a straight fight against Biden, particularly given concerns about his mental and physical ability.

But who knows?

Yes it is very possible that Trump would win, particularly because of the vagaries of the electoral college which like the Senate is biased towards Republicans. The appearance of strong third party candidates would almost certainly help Trump as in 2016.

Clearly neither Biden nor Trump is popular, but Trump is significantly more unpopular. The Democrats are getting quite good at mobilising the anti Trump vote, as they did in 2022, when the expected mid term Republican landslide never materialised.

I understand Biden running for a second term - the idea that he beat Trump once and therefore should do it again. It's understandable but sad that this is where we are at.

The next election should see a good new round of Democrats coming through - the bench is stronger - Gavin Newsome (gov California), Gretchen Whigmer (gov Michigan) should be the front runners having had 2 terms in their states, but also look out for Josh Shapiro (gov Pennsylvania) who is in his first term but has done superbly well in statewide elections in the swing state

What do they feel the Biden has done/is doing particularly badly? Don't get me wrong, I think he's a fairly uninspiring choice but other than being hamstrung by the usual Republican blocking if they hold either the Senate or the House, has he committed anything particularly egregious? I assume he'd be blamed for the Afghan fiasco but didn't Trump set that in motion anyway? As for Trump, I got the impression that he was worse than useless during his term in office, with the most significant 'achievement' being a nice tax break for all his rich mates. He didn't deliver on any of his vague promises about 'The Wall', health care or anything else did he?

He might have swerved away from that statement being a direct threat on Prosecutors and Witnesses in his trial by saying it was meant for his political opponents in the GOP primaries but not for his latest threat.

On Truth Social he posted.

...I never told a newly emboldened (not based on his 2% poll numbers) Pence to put me above the constitution, or that Mike was "too honest". He's delusional and wants to show he's a tough guy...

That is a direct reference to a witness statement in the indictment.
He's threatening a witness, something he was told he explicitly could not do.

I think the judge may have words with him on Monday and Trump better watch what he posts or says from now to the trial or he's going to be remanded in custody.
