I guess if Brandon signs his song should be something by The Killers? on 13:54 - Aug 24 by The_Flashing_Smile
It's objectively not sh!t music, it's just music you don't happen to like. They're not massively my cup of tea either but I can appreciate the musicianship, the interesting/non-cliched lyrics, the fact that they're a proper band etc.
Not a sh1t band, just bland, derivative, uninteresting except when pissed maybe cos they have a few catchy tunes. And both are good live, within the context of what they set out to do, obviously. I don't dislike either Coldplay or the Killers but if you're talking about musicianship and lyrical content, there are many better artists out there (I know you know that). It's all relative, as you say. And of course, people aren't idiots just for liking a band. The thing that grinds my gears is how fanatical people are without being into the stuff a) that it is derived from and b) that's..er, well "better" musicianship/lyricism/etc.
Oh, and just one example re interesting/non-cliched lyrics.... "I've got soul but I ain't a soldier" may tick both of your boxes but is, imvho, nonetheless a dogwvank lyric.

Whatever innit.
They may be uninteresting to you but they're obviously very interesting to others. Lady Dollers LOVES The Killers, but she's 10 years younger than me and music 'hits you' at certain times of your life.
I've never been much into The Beatles because they were before my time, but I bet lots of the music I like now is derived from them.
Regarding lyrics, you can probably pluck a 'bad' (in your opinion) lyric from any artist. Even whoever you consider to be the best lyricists.
I don't really know what "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" is about but someone with more knowledge could probably write a thesis on it. Maybe it's saying 'I care about stuff but I'm not really doing much about it, I'm not fighting for my beliefs' (just off the top of my head) which could be interesting, and not something you're likely to see/hear in a lowest common denominator pop song.
Or maybe he just like the internal rhyme of 'soul' and 'sol...'
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I didn't say they were uninteresting, in fact I said the opposite on 09:47 - Aug 25 with 473 views

And yes of course what is "interesting" is wholly subjective.
