What was his injury that he had.

He was really strange tonight.

That 2nd goal the way he lost the ball. Same thing happened inside the first 5 minutes which reading did nothing with.

But just random things too. His mind.

Late in the game he had the ball. Live in play. He's slowly moving forwards whilst looking back and up at the big screen. Clearly to see how many minutes left. But I just thought it was quite bizarre

Overall he looks really really far off from what he was. Perhaps never to get back to that level I dunno not sure what exactly he injured.

McKenna made the point on the EFL podcast recently that if you give the ball away playing out from the back and concede, people think you have a stylistic problem. But, if your keeper/defender lumps it up the pitch and the opposition win the ball and score, nobody draws the same conclusion.

It's very true. Launching it is likely to invite more pressure ultimately, you're just giving the ball back to the opposition for them to attack you again. If you retain possession you can release the pressure and, often, exploit space that the opposition has left by pressuring you in the final third. Lots of our goals have come from us being brave on the ball in our own defensive third.

There is a time and place though... What was it 88th minute? maybe later, im unsure, but at that specific moment, kick ball out and let your teammates get back. During the middle of a game, you can take that risk imo as even then if you concede a goal, you've got plenty of time to get one yourself.

He's not trying to do anything fancy with it, it's a straightforward pass back to the keeper. He's either tripped or manages to fall over his own feet. If he'd booted it out when he had a simple back pass on then that would have been poor decision making, imo.

He wasn't even trying to play out or take a risk though, he was just slow (and possibly fouled). He had ample time to just nudge it back to Slicker. He seemed to want to shield it out for a throw to begin with which is the opposite of trying to play out if anything.

I've not seen it back again, but on the screen last night it looked like he went to pass it back to slicker, changed his mind, when do try a cryff turn and got clipped whilst doing so.

The pass to slicker was 100% the option and the one i'd have wanted him to take absolutely. but if he felt that wasn't on for whatever reason, then yes wack it out, not trying anything fancy.
But it could simply be he went to pass back to slicker got clipped at the time...

Watch it back. He's not exactly executing a Cruyff turn.

Yeah just did. yeah tbf he's choosing the right option. It's either he's to slow with it, or tbh it's just good pressing. I wouldn't actually call that a mistake with confidence

You were responding to a post about Ipswich on an Ipsowich Town forum, mate. If you think there's a problem with playing out from the back, and this is how we play, it's not unreasonable to assume you think it is a problem for us. If you think it's not that's fine, but you could have made that much clearer as you only exempted Manchester City from criticism for playing out from the back, not us.

If you read what I posted originally it is talking generally about modern football and then as usual you give your spin on it, actually read what's been written. I’ll apologise and try and make things a little clearer for you next time. Perhaps if I’d actually made reference to Ipswich, then you’d have had a very valid point with your response.

He's fouled whilst making the pass. The red has made an honest error I think just looking at upper body contact maybe which was minimal...

Makes Edmundson look poor but wasn't really his fault. He got booked because he was fuming at the ref I think.

You then followed it up by saying you were sure we must have conceded from playing out from the back, it was only when several people pointed out that we hadn't that you started backtracking and saying you didn't mean Ipswich, just football more generally. Glad we've established that there's no issue with Ipswich playing out from the back but seems weird to have come on to a thread about how we play and have made a general comment about football that you didn't think applied to us.

Agreed. He was fine all game pretty much. Just needs to play games.

Pert suggested that they clipper his heels as well for the goal, so maybe it was a foul?

It wasn't though, it was a goal. Poor defending. We need better centre backs who get rid of the ball. Pretty football only gets you so far.

‘Pretty football only gets you so far’ … see also Manchester City, I think it’s fairer to say ugly football only gets you so far. Playing out from the back is not only pretty, it is also functional.
