Why is it allowed on here? It's quite disturbing.

I don’t think the freedom to criticise a state is disturbing at all. It’s the bedrock of democracy (and ironically something that’s being clamped down on in Israel).

It’s of course right to support the people of Israel after these attacks, but I feel less comfortable about showing open support for the Israeli state. It’s a horrible regime and people who’ve historically criticised it have every right.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Beyond comprehension that Netanyahu & co. have decided on that course - not just the barbarity of it, but their sheer stupidity in not realising (or not caring) that it’ll lose them a helluva lot of support that they were lucky previously to be able to take for granted.

Masterclass in how *not* to win friends and influence people, quite aside from the sheer inhumanity.

Hope there’s some kind of uprising against it from Israeli people, especially voters. Maybe change can only come from within?

You could say the same for hamas. They must know that their actions will have angered a lot of people who were previously sympathetic to the palestinian cause and now just want to see them (hamas militants) wiped off the face of the earth. Stating the obvious but they must really hate each other, so much so that they're way beyond caring about PR.

Poll: Which would you accept?

I’m inclined to think the best of people rather than the worst, most people see that as a good thing, but if you prefer to see the worst in people and describe yourself as a liar, then who am I to stop you.

Thread topic needs returning to.

Completely agree with every word of this.

& the other side of the coin:

Given the decades of oppression ordinary Palestinians have faced, I can’t help but sympathise with them and their cause. Of course, that does not equate to support for Hamas or the awful barbarism commited against civilians over the last few days.

Can I ask if the "beheading of babies" has been fact checked or is it still based on reports?

"That's it, the information is out. It's so macabre that no one wanted to reveal it until they had 100% confirmation.

🔺 Infants and children under 2 years old were beheaded by Hamas in the Kibbutz of Kfar Aza. It is a horror, a massacre.

For those asking for the source. They are multiple: Israeli army, internal intelligence service and atrocious images which reached me and which I was able to cross-check. But the best source remains this: courageous journalists from the foreign press who were able to see / agreed to see with their own eyes the bodies in Kfar Aza."

by Margot Haddad, French journalist.

Was also reported by Jeremy Boweb apparently (only heard that second-hand though, not directly from him).

That's a real tragedy, and I'm glad that the Government has announced that it will give £3 million to the Community Security Trust.

However, it also looks like there has been a similar increase in anti-Muslim hatred in the last few days according to this from Tell Mama, the Muslim equivalent of the CST; it appears that this always happens after an Islamist terrorist attack.

https://tellmamauk.org/anti-muslim-cases-to-tell-mama-triple-in-6-days-an-update

As the end of the day, Jews and Muslims in this country bear no responsibility for what is going on the the Middle East, and attacks on either community are to be deplored.

And this from the Director of Tell Mama is to be applauded.

“This rise in anti-Muslim sentiment is deeply worrying. We know that the Community Security Trust is also demonstrating a sharp rise in antisemitism and this shows that what happens in the Middle East, has real consequences and impacts for communities in the UK.

I urge people who have been targeted by anti-Muslim hate to report to us so that they do not suffer in silence. We should never allow such hatred and intolerance to take root in our communities and at this time, please look out for each other, whether Muslim or Jewish. We must stand together against intolerance, hate and racism.”

I’ve certainly seen a lot of rowing back by various journalists and the State Dept on this subject. I find it quite distasteful that people are focusing on *how* these babies died, rather than simply the fact that they died. I also find it horrible how (relatively) little focus there has been on the 400 Palestinian children who have died due to Israeli bombing in the past few days. It feels like it’s got a fraction of the coverage. All these people, all of them, have a right to life. It’s just absolutely horrific.

Disgraceful. Some people are scum.

Anyone using this crisis to attack innocent Jews or Muslims is scum.

I think it is only fair to point out that this decision has been made due to perceived concerns and not due to anything that has happened at the schools to date if this report is accurate.

It never went away, all that's happening now is its getting publicity.

My son has worn a skullcap (kippah) most of his life, certainly since the late 70s/early 80s and nearly every month since then he's had some racist comment made to him.

It did reduce for a period, but increased again when Corbyn became Labour leader.

Admittedly it was worse in the 80s/90s, I remember going to PR with him in the early 80s and him having people shouting things like stinking yid at him. He has also been beaten up twice in his life, and based on what they were shouting at him, it was purely because he was Jewish.

The murdering attack by hamas has simply given some people on the left and right an excuse to attack the Jewish community.

That's absolutely shocking.

Were I still in London, I would be tempted to volunteer for the Community Security Trust, who defend the Jewish community and buildings, assuming they are prepared to accept non-Jewish people as volunteers.
