What is the earliest possible point at which a Championship title could be guaranteed?
I do have a game number in mind, but I am not sure if my logic stands up.

That's a fun brain teaser. A very naive guess from me would be if you had one team winning and every other team drawing constantly, that'd be the earliest. Not sure what the number would be in that case.
28 games maybe? One team would have 84 points, the others would have at most 27 if I've done my maths right. This assumes a 24 team league.
I mean if we wanted to be really pedantic after one game if every other team got gigantic points deductions but that's no fun. [Post edited 9 Oct 2023 10:10]

Surly there can’t be a definite date as it’s all depending on the circumstances of the chasing teams. But in theory, if a team were to win their first thirty matches then going by past league tables, that team could be almost guaranteed the championship by the first or second week in January. |  | | |

So many variables! Quick calc in my head if we win our next 20 and everyone else draws every game we'll be guaranteed the championship, if we play Leicester twice within that time it will probably drop to 19 |  | | |

I think if someone wanted to be realllly pedantic they would point out that it wouldn't be guaranteed after one game in that scenario, because you couldn't guarantee that we would not face a points deduction ourselves before the end of the season :)

Yeah, I came up with game 28.
At that point the leader would be on 84 points, the closest challengers, with all other games being drawn would be on 27 points, with 54 points left to play for. | |

Boring maths bit:
If pl is the number of games played beyond which the top team could get the same number of points as a chasing team, and assuming as GS does above that all the chasing teams have drawn all of their games to date then:
3 x pl = the number of points that the potential league winning team will gain in pl games (at 3pts per game)
(1 x pl) + 3 x (46 - pl) is the maximum number of points that a chasing team can get during the rest of the 46 games season with pl games played
So, let's make those two terms the same, which could leave us with a non-integer value of pl:
3 x pl = (1 x pl) + 3 x (36 - pl)
Expanding everything out gives:
3 x pl = 138 - (2 x pl) and adding (2 x pl) to both sides gives:
5 x pl = 138 so pl = 138/5 = 27.6
So, the minimum number of games a team can win the league must be higher than 27.6 (as the chasing team would then not be able to catch the top team), therefore we round up to 28.
I think this'll work for any scenario of points per win/draw and number of games in a season... [Post edited 9 Oct 2023 14:00]
