Lambert had a good record at Norwich and would probably be an upgrade on Wagner. If Wagner carries on, Norwich will end up mid-table. With Lambert in charge, they are more likely to end up in the top 6.

Trouble is, last time Lambert did anything meaningful as a manager was with them, over decade ago. He's spent most of the intervening time demonstrating that that was a flukey one-off. | |

Did ok in the transfer market? Just read the list and couldn’t remember several of them and very few above a C in Andy’s grading. Not very impressive imo.
He did a great job in the first few weeks/months in terms of public relations, but it turned out to be all froth and no substance. |  |

The Huddersfield promotion, and keeping them up, was a notable achievement but recent history, as well as the Marcus Evans recruitment strategy, demonstrates that it's a lot easier to manage one promotion than to repeat it.

And, lest we forget, when he started he'd had a near-decade of failure. It wasn't as of he'd bailed on an ascendant NCFC to join us, he was looking to rebuild his reputation and, most importantly, secure himself another bog payday. | |

No, Hurst was the worst. Beyond useless. How he managed that good season at Shrewsbury will remain one of life’s great mysteries. But in what could be described as The Managerial Turd Awards, windbag Lambert is a close second with nutter Keane and hapless Jewell fighting it out for third. Merit award for Cook too. Has anyone ever hosed up the wall a better opportunity?
In the hate awards section, I detested Lambert the most. It wasn’t just because he didn’t know the difference between a team and a teapot. He had an air of arrogance about him that made me want to hit him all day long.
Ok, Jewell might have reminded me of a drunk staggering about looking for a corner to throw up in but he was quite funny. As was Cook. Who can ever forget the post Northampton explosion. Team under the bus. Everyone under the bus, including himself. It was then I began to think ‘Houston, we have a problem’.
The boilerman? Well, the press conferences were always an event, even if he did spud the money up the wall on the likes of Lee Martin. He was awful yet many of the good folk of Sunderland including a mate of mine, would re-employ him tomorrow. Strange.
And here I am looking back with misty eyes on that sorry little lot as we currently sit second in the Championship after just about the best start to any season for my club that I can ever recall. Time to give the head a wobble. [Post edited 26 Oct 2023 7:15]

He was incompetent, bought badly, fell out with key players needlessly, played terrible football, went on long losing runs, stayed in post far too long(he should have been gone by the end of September 2009) and yet was somehow inexplicably popular.
Everyone who followed had some of those elements to them, but none of them had ALL of them like Famous Roy.
And his squandering of what was at the time, a highly generous transfer budget, was a key element driving Marcus Evans' subsequent lack of interest in investing ANYTHING into the club
And that's why he's the worst ever. Although he only pips the Improved Football and a Better Matchday Experience brothers to that title. | |

Agree with all of that. The only crumb I can offer the boilerman was that I always looked forward to his press conferences - just in case he went berserk. A sort of jeopardy thing amongst the limp defence, if he bothered, of his awful team. | | | |

On balance Lambert was an absolute load of dog poo here, but one thing I would say is he certainly wasn't given the tools to do his job. He joined a sinking ship, he had Lee O'Neil wearing 5 hats behind the scenes when in reality he barely fit into 1 of them, and he had an owner who was cutting every last corner and had firmly checked out by then. I never blamed him for taking us down, the damage was done in the summer prior to his arrival and we did at least show a little bit of fight, albeit nowhere near enough of an upturn in results.
We started well the following season in L1. End of November we're 4 points above 3rd with a game in hand. From about there the rest is history. Form goes to sh1t, 5 year deal, COVID hits and the game is over for him. I did have some sympathy that his only qualified strength & conditioning help was working remotely from Scotland (work that one out) and it definitely contributed to having more players on the treatment table than available for selection. I don't suppose Lambert was ever rubbing his hands together at the prospect of starting Brett McGavin and 9 year old Liam Gibbs in the middle at home to Charlton, in a game that could've put us top. Or bringing in Jordan Roberts and Oli Hawkins. He's been in football long enough to know they weren't ever what we needed, rather they were what we could afford.
That's not to say he carried himself well thereafter, or that his man management was in any was effective. Some of the stories I've heard from that 12 months from the initial covid lockdown to his eventual sacking are horrendous. I've no idea how he didn't get sacked much sooner than he was tbh when he was begging for it for what seemed like months.
I personally think both things are true, he was a busted flush who seemingly missed his right hand man Culverhouse, a component of previous successes, but he was also working in an environment that wasn't in any way set up to succeed. |  | | |

Some of Lambert's interviews during his last few weeks where he spent most of the time throwing Evans under the bus were pretty entertaining. Far more so than the football at least. |  | | |
