So how much is Hirst long term injury going to effect season? near term solution 14:57 - Dec 28 with 1973 viewsunstableblue

Its a major blow, and I see Phil is confirming from the McKenna presser it's long term.

Hirst has 6 goals, and crucially 7 assists. He's provided great supply and knock downs to our deeper 3, especially Chaplin.

His press and workrate has been greatly improved, and Ladapo is miles off matching, and even the much faster Jackson. Indeed Hirst has surprised me with his pace this campaign.

And of course crucially he has excellent hold up ability, fending off bigger defenders with ease, taking pressure off and freeing marauding attacking midfielders.

We're obviously in for a new striker, and were before this injury. Maybe it might change the list and priority a little. Really not sure if Stansfield can be seen as direct Hirst replacement, he's more a higher quality Jackson or even a bigger Chaplin.

Also I'm struggling to see how we can afford the quality we need under FFP, i.e. someone to really improve us and be ready for the Premier League. But in McKenna and Ashton we trust!

Possibility that Hirst could affect our ability to keep up the 2 PPG, but I have to say McKenna ball does create threat, we did that against a brilliant Leicester defence - who packed the middle, and defended valiantly. Broadhead in better form could have scored, as could Chaplin, as could David, as could Ladapo... all without Hirst on the pitch.

But let's look to the near term - QPR (h), Stoke (a), Sunderland (h) (Wimbeldon away can be a day for Jackson/Ladapo if still here) - what attacking options can we bring??

Option 1:
---------------Ladapo
Harness-----Chaplin------Burns

Option 2:
---------------Ladapo
Brodhead----Chaplin-----Burns

Option 3:
---------------Jackson
Harness-----Chaplin------Burns

Option 4:
---------------Jackson
Brodhead----Chaplin-----Burns

Option 5:
--------------Chaplin
Broadhead---Harness---Burns

I quite like Option 5? is there a way to Bring Hutchison in?

What are your thoughts?

Surprise me!

The only forward we have who is capable of putting in the ame work rate as Hirst whilst providing valuable assists and closing down defenders is Marcus Harness imo.

That's not a criticism of Jackson or Ladapo, who have their own attributes but I think Harness can fit into the McKenna style of play.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

One game at a time, and against QPR we'll surely start Ladapo. Obviously, he's not at George Hirst's level, but he's an experienced striker, in double figures for Championship goals at a respectable rate (1 every 216 minutes) and will compete physically.

He played the majority of four games in a row back in September (Reading, Cardiff, Sheff Wednesday and Wolves) and we won all four and he scored four times. He's not going to be out of his depth, even if he won't be as dominant as Hirst sometimes is.

Get Shankland signed for the opening of the window!

I read that hearts want 5 mil for shankland, i cant see us spending that on an unproven outside of scotlanf striker, aged 28 with little sell on potential

Do we have a bit more FFP wiggle room with us pretty much guaranteed to finish in the playoffs as it stands bar a catasphoric disaster? Playoffs mean more money?

Think if Harness is in the 10. We can afford to go with ladapo. He doesn't have Hirsts pace. But he's still the closest option when it comes to bringing others into the game.

We will be weaker without hirst. But imo freddie can do that role for a few weeks. I think It was coastal who mentioned freddie before hirst came in. Now whilst he isn't as good freddie still did a solid enough job.

But I think you need harness up there for the extra pressure pace and keep burns high doing what he does best and putting pressure on that side. That way Chaplin ca support freddie with their own press.

a niche perspective

I haven't got a problem with Freddy starting.. I think he's effective when we are in control of games. And pinning teams back...
But, out of possession , he lacks the pace and sharpness of Hirst, which drastically downgrades our high press.
I recon Jackson starts, for the energy. Freddy off the bench, as it stands.
The saving grace (if you can call it that), is that we don't rely on our striker, alone, for goals.

Can't see us changing a great deal, just because one player is injured. If we do change it up, it would signal that we are no where near signing a striker, imo..
Could see an experimental forward line up in the Dons game, if KM was going down that rout.

EDIT.. Sorry Jay'... I was replying to the OP in general.. Didn't mean it as a reply to your post.. Butter fingers I'm afraid.

I think it's as simple as start games against sides who want to take us on with Jackson up top, and bring Ladapo on at ~60 mins. Or start games who want to park the bus with Ladapo up top, and a bit more flexible at ~60mins depending on the state of the game.

We’ve just outplayed Leicester City for c.55 mins without Hirst so I’m sure we can cope with most teams in this division. A bigger problem is the lack of Morsy and these two scans. Missing 4 regulars might be a real challenge, even against third from bottom.

I’d like to see this tbh:

Broadhead

Burns Chaplin Omari

Burns better suited position wise with Leif v Omari.

Omari and Clarke have always looked a good young duo when they play together imo. Broadhead just needs support and he will be firing again, put him upfront in this team and he scores plenty.

Ladapo for teams who sit back / low block / don't require a high press, and Jackson for teams who play a defensive high line leaving space to run in behind, or require a high press. I trust our manager to get the best out of the players we have without having to resort to using players out of position, and I trust every player in our squad to step up when they get an opportunity.

At the start of this season, there were discussions on here about who we were going to sign to replace Burgess because he wasn't good enough for the Championship, and people messing their pants that Walton was injured. Trust the squad.

The signings we made last winter window were organic; KVY was out of contract in the summer and struggling to get back to his best, so we signed Clarke to replace him, Broadhead was too good an opportunity to miss when he became available, and Hirst was a long term target. Luongo was probably the luckiest accident in the history of the club - doubt if he would have been training with us if it wasn't for the long term injuries to Ball and Evans.

We will sign 1 or 2 forward players this winter - hopefully Stansfield on a perm, and a replacement for Scarlett too; only 1 match until the window opens, so Ladapo and Jackson can carry us through that and until we can sign reinforcements.
