Good suggestions for watching football on 23rd March 2024... 16:58 - Feb 19 with 3724 views | hoppy | Non-League Day... It would be great to use the international break to fill up the attendances at local non-league football clubs that could do with the boost that a bumper attendance would give them. Usually super cheap, and a great day to witness and encourage local non-league football teams... https://nonleagueday.co.uk Here's some local to Ipswich... or you can put in your own postcode and find a game near you... https://nonleagueday.co.uk/map/?address%5B0%5D=Ipswich&post%5B0%5D=locations [Post edited 19 Feb 2024 16:58]

Good suggestions for watching football on 23rd March 2024... on 14:25 - Feb 20 by ford6600 | What's 'obnoxious ' and 'hypocritical ' about supporting both, local football and womens football? Why the club changed the date to Saturday is for them to answer. |
I’ll be honest, I doubt the club give a sht. They’ve move it to the Saturday so that more people can attend. I’ll be shock if anyone that was going to watch Ipswich Wanderers will now pack that in and go watch the ITFC ladies, and vice versa. Let’s be honest again, both non league and ladies football is a poor standard. Be like watching us back 5 years ago again… a weekend off football will be nice tbh.

Your attitude towards hoppy accusing him of "derailing" a thread about women's football whilst you go on to actually do that here, whilst being incredibly arsy too. The fact you seem to be jumping onto the women's team bandwagon just because the club have got behind it makes it even worse. Your post had nothing to do with supporting local football, quite the opposite you seem determined to pit Wanderers and the women against each other and being a dick to hoppy as well. No need for any of it.

Good suggestions for watching football on 23rd March 2024... on 14:47 - Feb 20 by hoppy | What didn't YOU understand? I'm involved as a volunteer at a local non-league side, Ipswich Wanderers. Non-League Day has been established for a number of years now, specifically on an international weekend, to try and encourage people to go out and support such clubs that could really do with the larger crowds on that day. I know, from an Ipswich Wanderers perspective, how tough it is to run a club at that level, so the larger crowds are a MASSIVE help, more through the gate, more purchases from the kitchen and the bar etc etc.. every little bit helps. (which is also why I did the 16 mile sponsored walk from Ipswich Wanderers to Stowmarket Town before the game on Saturday to raise some additional funds for the cost of the ground grading requirements we've got to complete). The success of ITFC men's team in the Championship is fantastic, and the season so far has gone beyond our wildest dreams. As a season ticket holder of a number of years, ITFC has always been my club so I am loving it. The downside of that success is that even when Town are playing away from home, people are watching the games on TownTV, or by other means, and attendances have been down in the non-league scene as a result, which adds to how tough it is to keep going. You said on the other thread that you'd "Mentioned watching them in the past but playing out at Felixstowe put us off." and "Didn't realise the womens team were down in 3rd division" ... and "Lets support them, they afterall represent us all - they to are IPSWICH TOWN." (obviously apart from if you have to go all the way to Felixstowe to do so...!!) - so moaning about someone involved in a local non league club making a post about supporting non-league clubs on Non League Day when you've clearly not been that bothered about supporting the women's team up until this point does seem a bit hypocritical, don't you think? |
The club are obviously trying to raise the profile of the clubs womens team by playing the match at PR to engage more supporters, like me who have thought about watching, but playing at PR will test the waters to see what interest their might be. All well and good. The fact it clashes with the non league day is not helpful. I suggest if you live near a local team go and try it, if your in Town and fancy seeing the match at PR then give it a go.

Good suggestions for watching football on 23rd March 2024... on 13:41 - Feb 20 by ford6600 | You mentioned Non League Day on the women's football thread, is their a need to have this thread as you seem to be trying to derail interest in a historic Ipswich Town womens match at Portman Road on 23rd March 2024...You could try to generally push for non league football engagement, which most of us support, but given the clash of dates refrain from targeting 23/3/24 specifically. |
Jesus H, you're a cry baby. You're doing your cause no favours here by taking this tone with folk.

"The downside of that success is that even when Town are playing away from home, people are watching the games on TownTV, or by other means, and attendances have been down in the non-league scene as a result". I hadn't thought about that impact on non league teams. From a PL or Championship perspective, I've always thought it stupid that we can't have streams to all matches (without hopping 'abroad') as it won't hit our attendances. You'd go if you can get a ticket and we sell out when we're on the telly already. I hadn't thought about people filling in a spare afternoon with a trip to a local non league club. How big has the drop off in numbers been and is there also a post-Covid lockdown hit on numbers at all?

Now you said it it's sort of obvious but it had never occured to me that Town doing well could have a detrimental impact on non-league sides, as more people have become invested in what is happening at Portman Road - or on the road - so swaying away from attending non-league matches. ETA - Just seen Swansea posted something similar! [Post edited 20 Feb 2024 16:20]

I can't speak for all local sides, obviously, but I think being the 'second' team in Ipswich possibly impacts us more directly with in person attendances for home gates at PR being up so much. For the likes of Felixstowe, Bury Town, Stowmarket, Leiston, Lowestoft, Needham Market etc, they're very much the top sides in their own towns so their gates seem to have held up better, albeit still a drop from previous seasons - whether that's ITFC doing so well, or a follow on from Covid its difficult to tell, given both happened the same sort of time. I know we've had games where we might've expected a larger crowd at Wanderers, but then the ITFC game has been too attractive or has been moved for Sky on occasions - we've tried to publicise that we'll have that game on the screens in the clubhouse in the hope people would come and watch that, and then stay for the Wanderers game, or stay on for the sky game if it's been at 5.30. The most disappointing was an attractive game at home to top of the table Lowestoft a few weeks ago, when Town weren't playing until the Monday night at Leicester, we had been hoping for a bumper crowd because of that, only to have to organise a pitch inspection about 10am and the referee call the game off due to a frozen pitch. That game has been rearranged for next Tuesday evening (27th) but we won't get anywhere like the crowd we would've had that Saturday, with families probably not bringing young kids down for an evening game from Lowestoft.

I go to non-league games every so often with my brother, who is a referee assessor, and am always surprised at how entertaining the games are (I am never surprised by my brother correcting me on my opinion of why the ref got it wrong.) I would suggest that if you go to a non-league match with the expectation that the players will be as well trained and skilful as those you see at Portman Road then you will be disappointed but if you go with an open mind and analyse what is going on then you will have a good afternoon out. It is also interesting to see what is tucked away at Humber Doucy Lane or Woodbridge in terms of the clubhouses and pitches with the infrastructure around them.
