Nottingham Forest appoint Clattenburg... 13:18 - Feb 20 with 3696 viewsBiGDonnie

As a referee analyst. Boss Nuno Santo wants him to explain the 'decisions going against his side'.

Erm, fcuk right off Forest. What a joke.

Complete waste of time in football, Because the referees are so inconsistent, I noticed they have a referee on soccer Saturday, and he can’t even explain why a decision was or wasn’t give half the time , he was even sat half way across the studio like an outcast .

Referees are "inconsistent" largely becasue many decisions in football are down to interpretation. Yes, many are more relluctant to give a second yellow for an offence which would usually be a yellow if the player hadn't already been booked. And I agree with that. And if a referee enforces the strict "letter of the law" he is derided for being robotic or pedantic. They can't win, although fans naturally get riled when a big, contentious decision goes against their team.
Davis could easily have been given a 2nd yellow in the first half on Saturday. Inconsistent, but did we complain about that?

What a waste of money. Read the rule book. Hes not even a current ref.

I think a few eyebrows would be raised if any team put a current ref on the payroll.

You seem to be saying, effectively, that an offence should be a yellow card in one instance but the identical offence should not be a yellow card in another instance.

Surely you are advocating inconsistencies?

It’s human nature to be inconsistent. For example, an individual will drive perfectly well one day but one another do something completely reckless. People are inconsistent everywhere, referees are not exempt from this.

Yeah it smacks of desperation.

Really hope they get a bid points deduction and go down. Dodgy as hell from top to bottom.

Probably a very useful person to have around.

I often look at the stats for refs when betting on card markets. I'm sure most clubs do as well. Forest have just taken it a step further.

Truly impaired.

Why is he? So they can moan and say a former professional ref agrees we were hard done by?

I find it quite funny actually. Who knows could be useful insight, though judging by the level of inconsistency we're seeing from ref to ref probably not.

I am aware of inconsistencies being a part of the human condition but, with a football referee, we surely need to be reducing them as much as possible. I was responding to someone who seems to be suggesting that we do the opposite.

That's how I saw it. 'You had two decisions go against you this week' - ok, then what?

Hope we're the ones to send em down next season

A bit of a strange thing to get affronted by imo. What is it that annoys you about it?

It's the in-game inconsistencies that wrankle for me more than the week to week/ref to ref ones.

I understand why refs seem to adopt a higher criteria for a 2nd yellow & while this can appear inconsistent, it makes sense to me as I don't like to see games ruined by unnecessary 2nd yellows. Any one who wants "consistency" from refs should have been screaming for Davis to have been sent off in the first half at Swansea for a clear end yellow.

The rules should be as clear as possible regarding what constitutes a yellow card offence. Then the ref should show a yellow every time whether a first or second yellow. Maybe there would then be fewer accusations of refs being inconsistent.

Of course refs are human and humans err. And they can only be looking in one direction at any moment. And players cross their line of sight.

But it must surely be desirable to reduce inconsistencies as much as possible and, to do that, refs must treat each incident in the same way regardless of whether it is 1st or 2nd yellow card offence.

Good old consistency.

It doesn't exist and never will. Chasing and calling for it every week is pointless.
