Similar turnout in Kingswood (39%) and in Wellingborough (38%).
Turnout in by-elections has been on a general downward trend since the mid 80's, but the average is still around 50%.
General elections average a 69% turnout, but again there is a downward trend developing, voter apathy is a big issue, importantly the feeling that 'it makes no difference'.
A bigger issue is the percentage of 18-25 year olds that have never cast a vote. |  |

Not quite, because Labour fouled up their candidate vetting the constituency was left with an attention seeking issue chaser with a dubious record of appalling moral stances as the only viable alternative to the Conservatives (that a local businessman who only decided to stand four weeks ago actually came second speaks volumes about the perception of our ruling party at the moment.)
If 'none of the above' was the option that would show a lack of faith in representational democracy, if 'anyone but George Galloway' was the option that would show a lack of faith in one particular politician. | |

What about rather than compulsory voting being the proposal an alternative of MP's pay being linked to voter turnout ? Anything below 40% and the MP is on minimum wage and then a rising scale with a cut off point of 85% voter turn out giving the current MP's pay and allowances. I would allow MPs on minimum wage to attend training courses at their local Jobcentre though... | |

We have a government which, in the opinion of a big majority, is worse than useless but at the last three by elections less than 40% of the electorate bothered to vote.
With so many people supposedly sick & tired of this government you would expect this to lead to an increase in the number voting.

The story of the election will be the number of people clearly totally disillusioned with the two biggest parties being 'two cheeks of the same backside' as Galloway put it last night. We have a Labour party that isn't really a Labour party and a Conservative party that isn't really a Conservative party.

In our local election last year 10% of the papers (including mine) were recorded as spoilt. Our choices were - Tory, Tory, Tory, Reform.
