39% turn out. on 09:57 - Mar 1 with 2793 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | In Iran the elections are widely regarded as not free, or fair so it’s hardly surprising they don’t turn out. As for Galloway; “I don’t like Labour’s stance on the massacre in Gaza, so I’m going to vote for a racist who shilled for Assad whilst he was gassing Muslim civilians “.

39% turn out. on 10:02 - Mar 1 with 2753 views | Cheltenham_Blue | Similar turnout in Kingswood (39%) and in Wellingborough (38%). Turnout in by-elections has been on a general downward trend since the mid 80's, but the average is still around 50%. General elections average a 69% turnout, but again there is a downward trend developing, voter apathy is a big issue, importantly the feeling that 'it makes no difference'. A bigger issue is the percentage of 18-25 year olds that have never cast a vote.

39% turn out. on 10:03 - Mar 1 with 2749 views | Guthrum | It's a by-election. By-elections always have something between a half and two-thirds the turn-out of a general election. They don't change the government. I fully expect the GE turn-out to be in the order of 70% nationally.

I think that it is probably engagement that the political class fear the most!

Not quite, because Labour fouled up their candidate vetting the constituency was left with an attention seeking issue chaser with a dubious record of appalling moral stances as the only viable alternative to the Conservatives (that a local businessman who only decided to stand four weeks ago actually came second speaks volumes about the perception of our ruling party at the moment.) If 'none of the above' was the option that would show a lack of faith in representational democracy, if 'anyone but George Galloway' was the option that would show a lack of faith in one particular politician.

What about rather than compulsory voting being the proposal an alternative of MP's pay being linked to voter turnout ? Anything below 40% and the MP is on minimum wage and then a rising scale with a cut off point of 85% voter turn out giving the current MP's pay and allowances. I would allow MPs on minimum wage to attend training courses at their local Jobcentre though...

39% turn out. on 10:28 - Mar 1 with 2565 views | Pinewoodblue | I find the turnout at recent by elections worrying. We have a government which, in the opinion of a big majority, is worse than useless but at the last three by elections less than 40% of the electorate bothered to vote. With so many people supposedly sick & tired of this government you would expect this to lead to an increase in the number voting. Doesn’t show a lot of faith in the alternatives available.

In this country we are becoming far more partisan in regards to voting, "I'll never vote Tory/Labour". It seems, as a result, the method of displaying dissatisfaction with your party is to not put your coat on.

I'm personally expecting the next GE to be a Labour victory with the lowest voter turnout/highest number of spoiled votes in a long time. The story of the election will be the number of people clearly totally disillusioned with the two biggest parties being 'two cheeks of the same backside' as Galloway put it last night. We have a Labour party that isn't really a Labour party and a Conservative party that isn't really a Conservative party. A newly formed right of centre party will then come to the fore and start causing the sort of disruption the likes of Wilders and Le Pen are in the Netherlands and France.

In our local election last year 10% of the papers (including mine) were recorded as spoilt. Our choices were - Tory, Tory, Tory, Reform. And then one of the Tories who (unsurprisingly) got elected had the cheek to moan about the number of people choosing the spoil their papers.
