What were peoples expectations for this season? 08:25 - Mar 10 with 3355 viewsblueprint

At the start of the season mid table would have been fantastic imo.

As the season has gone on just to be challenging has been amazing but defeats like yesterday really do put a dampener on the weekend.

I still believe there are plenty of twists and turns to be had but I also think that whatever happens it’s been a fantastic year and a half which is up there with the best in my 42 years of coming to PR.

I posted this a while ago, but my pre-season 'wants' were:

- Stay up
- Don't get spanked by anyone
- Beat Norwich once at least

I should remind myself of this more often now my minimum expectation became 9 wins in a row before southampton game!

I personally felt we'd have a good crack at the top six

Thought we’d be in the battle for the POs and would finish somewhere between 5th and 8th.

To get the number of points we have is incredible and in any normal season, the finishing line for top two would almost be in sight.

However, it isn’t a normal season and we need to keep at it. Yesterday was a set-back, but another six wins and a couple of draws should see us in with a good chance…. The games against Southampton, Norwich, Coventry and Hull could make or break us.

6 or above was too much to expect
12 - 8 was my guess whilst the hope was to have a bit of fun near playoffs at end of season
Anything above 16 was considered a solid season
Lower wouldn’t have been a total surprise at first time of asking but hoped for more

What an incredible season we are having

I predicted 8th.

After winning promotion, I would have been happy with just establishing ourselves back in the championship. There were a lot of unknowns about how our squad would handle the step up a league. No matter what happens between now and the end of the season, we are pretty much guaranteed a crack at promotion - be it in top 2 or play offs. To lose in the play offs would be heartbreaking but still we would have had a fantastic season. My main concern is if we don't go up, can we hold to Mckenna? Surely some prem clubs are gonna come sniffing around in the summer.

This is the most disappointing element for me.

If we don't go up, we've accelerated McKenna's leaving point.

Had we been challenging for a last play-off spot, I think McKenna's stock would have continued to rise, but we'd then have probably sold a couple of our better players for a few pounds and looked to improved for a second go next season (as was probably the plan)

As it stands, McKenna's profile is so high, if we don't make it, he'll likely now not stay plus we'll lose a couple of our better players (and rightfully so...we know it's a business) and we're back the the unknown of who'll come in next.

That's the saddest part of being relatively successful.

History suggested Town would go up as champions this season and be surprise winners of a very open top division next season - with the key competitors otherwise engaged.

Obviously Norwich will knock Town out of the FA Cup at Portman Road yet again - but it’s a small price to play - especially as it will be a reserve fixture.

I see no reason to change my mind - the other teams will be to focused on the champions league.

I watched little Championship football in our absence so was open-minded. Predicted 6th optimistically. Thought bottom third would have been underachieving, so would have stopped short of describing a mid-table finish as fantastic, but very respectable sure.

Incredible as it's been though, it's fair to say the main EFL content creators had us earmarked for a strong season. The Second Tier (2nd), NTT20 (3rd), FourFourTwo (5th) and Off The Line (8th) all expected us to challenge, which probably helped steer the betting as we were 5th-7th favourites there too, depending on the month. I remember SportingLife doing a focus on Chaplin to be top goalscorer as well (40/1).

The only real naysayer was Opta's supercomputer, which pencilled us in for 18th. It's the points total that's the really mad bit about what we've managed so far.
