George Burley just a thought 18:35 - May 23 with 1374 views | kizaitfc | Did we have to fight off any interest in Burley after he had such a great year in his year in the prem? I don't remember there being much???

George Burley just a thought on 18:38 - May 23 with 1326 views | Churchman | I don’t remember any. But then football wasn’t the plastic circus it is now. It was also well known that GB was an Ipswich man through and through, so not for hire in the way managers are these days.

George Burley just a thought on 18:51 - May 23 with 1213 views | MattinLondon | A lot of today’s rumours and speculation is due to unfortunate timing. Both Chelsea and Man U have (or might) parted company with their managers. If both of those clubs had had good seasons then those rumours would be fairly limited. Same with Brighton - their manager didn’t want to toe the line so he left as well. I don’t remember any big or medium biggish jobs being available after we finished fifth so maybe that had something to do with the lack of rumours back then. It was a fairly long time ago so my memory could well be clouded.

The 24-hour news cycle was in its infancy, too.

He was PREMIER LEAGUE manager of the season, ahead of Houlier who won a cup treble. His achievement was massive. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/1342681.stm [Post edited 23 May 2024 20:03]

Social media certainly adds another dimension. TWTD existed then, but it’s TwitTwot that’s the problem. So easy for any utter bellwhiff to get an audience for their attention seeking bull.

George Burley just a thought on 20:51 - May 23 with 743 views | Pique | There never seemed to be anything like the same level of interest in him. Can think of several reasons: 1. The managerial merry-go-round was nowhere near as insane then as it is now. 2. No social media, so no 24 hour speculation - you had to buy the tabloids if you wanted to read made-up rubbish. 3. Burley was a little older than McKenna is now, about 45 I think. 4. Burley was (and is) Ipswich through and through - it was so obvious that it was his dream job that it would have taken something pretty spectacular to tempt him away. He certainly wouldn't have been leaving for a Brighton (the equivalent of which in those days was probably Charlton).
