You write...

"... thought Ashton got the whole tone wrong from the start with his 'don't complain, get on with it' comments. He approached it with his coldhearted, corporate hat on rather than the human touch which was obviously going to be necessary."

I think that's unfair. What he said was...

“Again, we’ve looked at the different options, the increase from the 2,000 to the 3,000 will be predominantly upper Cobbold and S Block in lower Cobbold.

“What I would ask fans to do is just breathe. Please do not contact the ticket office or customer services trying to get ahead of this. We know who you are and we will be in contact with you really, really quickly and we’ll give you alternatives.

“But it doesn’t matter how long you’ve sat in that seat, you will be moving. And respectfully I ask you to understand why. We have no alternative.”

What are the club meant to do? No easy solution... indeed, no solution at all for people who are (quite fairly) cross at having to move. Tis the price of our quite brilliant (and ridiculous) last two years.

Hmm, not a lot of compassion in that to me and the tone in which he said it was unnecessarily blunt imo. Don't need to personally ring each person apologising of course but don't think a little bit more understanding of what exactly moving entails for quite a lot of people would have gone amiss.

No-one's disputing that this had to happen, just that it could have been handled better. Ashton said they'd be in contact really quickly but they seem to have staggered the emails for some reason then given people next to no time to sort out where to move to.

Anyone who's spent any time in the ground at all will know the areas having to move contain a lot of old timers who have spent years building a little community among themselves which essentially have to be ripped up. Think that's what makes some of the comments (not yours) very off to me and the sort of entitled PL fan mindset people on here claim to hate.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

If people were aware that they may need to move, they could have said actual goodbyes to people they've known for 20 years, or swapped numbers or the like to try and keep in touch

I still bump into people who I used to sit with 15 years ago, and have a good chat when I see them, that's part of being a longer term fan the friendships with people you don't even know the name of!

I've just been moved as many know and the guy next to us who we known a good while and would have tried to engineer it so we could stay together in the new area; however he still hasn't had an email and thinks he will be okay if he keeps quiet despite his seat being "new press area" side of us. So they are either staggering the emails for the 600 or he has been forgotten or the email lost somewhere. Either way by having to phone up the next day to sort seats, there has been no time to plan staying with people near you (assuming you had contact details).

It's Pioneer upper.

Broadly speak it's the front rows (don't know how many - I was second row) around the halfway line to make way for the new press box

Nice one, thanks for the info mate.

Fair enough, and we can agree to disagree re the tone in that first salvo from Ashton.

Totally understand the point about communitities within the ground. I've been in the same spot for twenty years and many have come and gone but there's a handful (apart from who I knew beforehand) who have been there through thick and thin. We only ever see each other in the stands, and we have fook all in common except being Towen supporters, but it's a little gang innit, and especially the last two years has been rather emotional all of us together.

It's changed significantly in the last couple of years but remember being at Burnley once for a midweek game under Jewell and I reckon I was on nodding terms with about 50% of our support. Basically everyone that didn't get there on a Galloways coach.

Out of curiosity, how do you define as a Johnny come lately?

Before last season I hadn’t had a season ticket. That makes me a Johnny come lately, presumably and ripe for banishment to the restricted views? Sounds fair to me if any of the rug brigade wants a seat in GG.

However, I’ve had an ST for around 23 seasons from the last 33. I followed the club long before that standing, including most of the worst of times. Am I still a Johnny come lately? The second question is have every single person in the displaced block taken root in their seat for past 10-20 years? Remarkable longevity if the answer is yes.

My reason for writing this is to highlight that whatever policy or process the club adopts, people are going to be inconvenienced and perhaps unfairly p*ssed off. Everyone’s circumstances are different and it’s not a problem I’d like to have had to deal with. There is no easy solution and the tiny timeframe just makes things worse. Well I can’t think of a practical one anyway.

The timeframe in which the club is trying to handle this looks fine to me. What it is actually doing is keeping the hacking off of people to a minimum by numbers - also fine. The messaging and process? I get what they’ve been trying to say and do but to be kind I’d say ‘room for improvement’ and plenty to learn, if they are serious about customer service.

I guess the positive outcome is that those who have season tickets will get to see the club in the PL again - something I never thought I’d see happen. Secondly, this problem has really shone a light on the inadequacy of the stadium at the moment and hopefully that’ll help push the redevelopment of it forward in a practical, sustainable way.

I do hope those displaced get sorted, have first dibs when the Cobbold is redeveloped and in fact before that for better seats that come up as they inevitably will. It shouldn’t be hard for the club to keep a list, just as it’s going to have to with a waiting list for non-season ticket holders.

Exactly. I have seen some posts saying those who have had season tickets for years get priority. I'm akin to you. Had mine for five years now but before that I was living in Leeds and couldn't afford it with the travel. But, had a season ticket from 1985 through to 2000 (ish). Does that make me a newbie or old school.
At the end of the day, the club have their hands tied behind their backs on the works that are required but the positive is all ST holders will get to see the games, albeit a different viewpoint but they still get to see it.

They can say their goodbyes in the Fanzone or the Black Horse can’t they? If they’re that bigger ‘family’ surely they’ll have each others’ contact details. My dad did when he sat in one of the fossil blocks in middle Pioneer. They’d swap Christmas cards, recipes, knitting patterns and everything.

2025/26 season with full Premier league pricing in place, if we stay up, will likely throw up opportunities of seat changes for some. We have bargain season ticket prices this season.
