Football and domestic violence 21:40 - Jun 24 with 2589 viewsgtsb1966

This story is horrific. There must be women everywhere who absolutely dread these tournaments.

Quite. I wonder if that was before or after he had stubbed cigarettes out on her face. It's hard to understand how anyone can be that scared that they put up with it for 29 years.

There’s a special place in hell for bullies like that. Hopefully prison isn’t too comfortable.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Coercive control can make it very difficult if not impossible for some women to break the emotional & mental chains; plus they often lack a support network (communication with family/friends having been blocked out by the abuser), & the financial means to go it alone (the abuser often having taken control of all the finances too).

I do not remember the exact quote but it was in an episode of OFAH where Del-Boy described his father. "He was handy when it came to hitting women and kids. No good with men but with women and kids, a real hard nut." That sums up these people perfectly.

Well said. Living in the real sense of the words lonely and in fear. Nobody should live like that, but far too many clearly do. Solution? Better, stronger laws and consequences and more far reaching, comprehensive support networks.

Is that a solution really? Of course not. Just an out/ some sort of support for victims. It is in the nature of far too many males to control, bully and take what they want; to do as they please at the expense of anyone and everyone, particularly women. And it should be noted that what you see when you meet people is often different to how they behave behind closed doors.

What do you do about creatures like this? Take them out of society is all I can think of, since my preferred solution (let’s just call it the Hammurabi) principle will never be legally allowed.

Inside the mind of every bully is a pathetic, frightened and half formed individual who has found a way to impose themselves on (some aspects of) the World. It's a sh1t life for people around them and actually a sh1t life for them too. They do need psychiatric help to connect with that insecurity, accept it and downgrade their expectations, but it's a big ask for them to take the long, hard road to normality.

I agree with the first sentence. Not sure about the second. Many blokes really enjoy violence, intimidation etc. They know it’s wrong but to them it’s natural and right, not least because they get a real buzz; gratification from it. The consequences on their victims? Not on their radar because their victims are of less value than a Rizla wrapper. They don’t matter.

Whether it’s nature or nurture, insecurity or whatever, I’m not convinced any form of psychiatric help or education makes any difference to people like this. I’m rather a pessimist when it comes to modifying how people behave.

There are covert ways for victims to ask for help without drawing the attention of the abuser, including a now internationally recognised hand signal which is a fluid movement of folding thumb across the open palm, and then folding all 4 fingers down on it; code words which can be used at chemists (asking for ANI) and bars ('Angela'); asking questions which require only a 'yes' or 'no' answer etc.

Can be used during video calls, in cars, entering or leaving home, a shop, petrol station etc.

There was an episode of Alfie Moore's 'It's A Fair Cop' last month that dealt with domestic violence, I wasn't sure if it was a subject for comedy but Alfie is good at using comedy to bring us round to serious thinking:

I shared this with a friend because we have a mutual acquaintance who has suffered, seemed to be appreciated.

This makes my blood boil.

I hope he gets a taste of his own medicine on the inside. Wasted 19 years of that poor woman’s life, 19 years she will never get back.

Didn't hear that particular one, but thr episodes of 'It's a Fair Cop I have heard have been great, both funny & informative - he's an excellent communicator & strikes just the right balance. Bet he was superb as a patrol officer.
