Saka at left back 22:26 - Jun 25 with 2470 views | bournemouthblue | that is where we are now, well done Gareth and your brainless omission of an actual left back to support Shaw And I am by no means saying we should have picked Leif, I just can't for the life of me understand why we decided having 4 right backs and one left back with a dodgy injury record was the way to go There's about 3 or 4 other PL left backs he could have taken

I take it back, all these out of position defenders and central midfielders playing disjointed turgid dross? This isn't Lambertball at all, it's Roy Keane's Ipswich.

I think the general point stands. Hladky was a striker in his teenage years, but I wouldn’t drop Hirst for him. We’d be better off playing round pegs in round holes in my opinion (I could be wrong though as the view that a decent player can play anywhere is fairly prevalent in the game).

I think there's four right backs in the squad, Walker, Trent, Konsa and Trippier?

Let's be honest, Southgate hasn't selected Saka ever with this idea in mind though nor do I see it being particularly likely he considers Saka in this role, even if Ian Wright thinks it might be a good idea

Saka at left back on 10:41 - Jun 26 with 1765 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | I find it crazier hearing Ian Wright suggest Saka go to left back. Southgate gets a load of stick but the same stick should be aimed at Ian Wright for even suggesting this. Saka is the best winger in the squad, why on earth put him at left back? You'd be delighted as an opposition seeing Saka at left back. 1) Takes away the threat further up the pitch 2) Weak link in defence.

Saka at left back on 11:23 - Jun 26 with 1691 views | Bellevue_Blue | This shouldn't really be a discussion but we are so lacking by not having an overlap threat or a left footer. The lack of a threat allows the right-hand side of the opposition to get up the pitch whilst also enabling them to roll the defence across to defend the inside & right. It's pretty staggering that the England manager of 8 years has decided our best way to attack is to telegraph exactly where we intend to attack and to do it tediously slowly. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Saka at left back clearly isn't ideal but he's worth considering since he has some (albeit limited) experience of the position and while you'd be removing his threat further forward there are alternatives in that position who could be at least as good. You'd also be potentially increasing our threat on the left by playing him there. We have next to none down that side at the moment.

If England could play with a shape similar to Town, with Saka as Leif Davis, as it were, then I think it could work. In possession, Saka pushes on, with a back three holding, with Palmer and Walker on the right, which creates options on both sides of the pitch, more so if Gordon can get more minutes. Out of possession, revert to a back 4, with Bellingham/ Mainoo and Rice as the 2 central midfielders. Currently, every single move on the left results in the player in possession turning back and playing the ball infield, if we’re serious about progressing that has to change, and while Gordon may be the answer, the lack of a progressive left back will limit his effectiveness. Since we can’t undo the squad selection errors, then a Saka experiment might work.

I just think it's silly. It's better to have a proper bona-fide international class right-footed full-back at LB (Trippier] than convert a winger into a full-back half way through a tournament. We're already trying to sort out the midfield - why create another hole to bury ourselves? Trippier can do a job, and if you want more genuine width down the left side then it's Gordan further up the pitch. We've just got to accept Southgate f#cked it up with the LB situation and not go and make it worse by playing more players out of position. Let Trippier do a steady job and give Gordan a chance.
Saka at left back on 21:37 - Jun 26 with 1226 views | You_Bloo_Right | If Trippier is part of the problem and Shaw isn't fit, just play Gomez at LB.
