All this talk of "Prem experience" 09:58 - Jul 13 with 1547 views | Guthrum | Surely it's Prem quality which is the more important factor? Prem football is not a different game to that in the EFL. A higher standard, yes, but the same sport. It's not like switching codes in rugby or between red and white ball in cricket. The approach is the same. Analyse the opposition, decide how our team can take advantage of any weaknesses and guard against their strengths. Set out how we intend to play, with contingencies. Train and drill the squad accordingly. Go out and perform. McKenna knows all that, he's been involved in doing it on a practical level many times at ManU. Plus he's not one to go into things blindly, without intense study and research. I doubt the players themselves are blase about what they will be facing (especially starting off against Liverpool and ManC). Even if they were, McKenna will have disabused them of it. I don't quite get what one or two individuals having played there before will add, if the skill is there already and so long as our on-field leaders can rally in the face of setbacks. Which they seem very good at - how many points did we gain from losing positions last season? I would be greatly surprised if anyone is taking this lightly. It does seem to me that the hype surrounding the Prem has artificially elevated it into something apart from all other football. Whereas, in reality, quite a number of teams and players have moved back and forth between there and the EFL over the years. To illustrate the point: Last season we finished just one point behind the 2016 Prem Champions. At the top end, it is a very high standard, but a lot of it not so much. For me, the most important place to have the Prem experience is in the driving seat - which is Kieran McKenna. It helps that Ashton has some as well, so he can make realistic decisions to support the manager.

All this talk of "Prem experience" on 10:36 - Jul 13 with 1389 views | Mookamoo | Will be interesting to see who will become the new Jackson and the player people bin off because they feel they lack the quality and experience for the league we're in, despite them being part of a very tight squad and system. My money is on Chaplin. There is a clamour to get experience in, but he has the personality and drive that is going to be very important in those game when we are chasing a goal.
All this talk of "Prem experience" on 11:03 - Jul 13 with 1297 views | Vic | You are of course, as always, right in all this. I’m very happy - more than happy with who we’re bringing in. Much better than perhaps I’d dared to believe for. I mean, how many of us really thought we’d get Hutch back. I know Hanson was wrong when he said his thing about not winning anything with kids, but recieved wisdom is that a bit of experience of the situation is never a bad thing. KM does give us that and he seems to be incredibly emotionally intelligent as a manager as well as tactically astute. But I’d be surprised if somewhere along the line we don’t see one or two brought in who can just tell the younger lads what’s what and calm things when necessary.

It's not just that the game is faster paced & higher standard, it's the level of pressure, media scrutiny, larger crowds, etc. Having someone who has been and done it before giving the younger/less experienced players advice can never be a bad thing. Suspect that's why Aluko is still around too (even if his prem experience wasn't extensive!). [Post edited 13 Jul 2024 11:29]

I think you're likely correct and we will get a couple of more experienced people. If nothing else, to play the Keogh/Aluko role for this season - less regular player and more semi-coach. Perhaps on loan. The post was more inspired by what I sense as an air of increasing nervousness that we're signing the very best of the Champ (and possibly looking overseas) but not yet any established Prem figures. We have a core group of hardened campaigners who have got us from L1 to here. It's not like we need to set up the on-pitch leadership for a completely changed squad on entering a new division. We have a man at the helm who (along with several of his coaching team) knows the lie of the land ahead.

Yes, exactly that - the Keogh and Aluko role. In the past we had Mogga and possibly others. Just an older bod, someone who’s been there and done that who can put a calming, reassuring arm on the shoulder at crucial times.

As well as McKenna, it is worth remembering: Delap has spent 4 seasons on the books of the Premier League champions and was around their set up whenever he wasn't on loan; Rosenior isn't like working for a League 1 manager either. He probably has some influence from growing up with a Premier League footballing dad too. Johnson has 6 years experience playing in the Premier League with West Ham and was at their academy before that. Hutchinson has spent most of his life in top Premier League academies even making a Premier League and an FA Cup appearance for Chelsea. Davis spent 3 seasons at Leeds, one of which was in the Premier League and appeared for them in it. Harry Clarke spent 8 years in the Arsenal system. Jack Taylor spent 8 years in the Chelsea academy. Burgess played his early football at Fulham who were a Premier League set up around that time and has decent international experience. Tuanzebe has around 30 Premier League appearances whilst spending 8 seasons in and around Man Utd and Villa squads. Broadhead spent 16 years at Everton (9 years in their academy before a further 7 around their squad) and has appeared in the Premier League for them. He has some decent international experience too. Hirst spent 2 seasons with Leicester in the Premier League including appearing in it and probably has some influence from growing up with a Premier League footballing dad. Burns has some international football experience. Walton spent a season at Brighton in the Premier League and I expect we will sign another keeper who has some Premier League experience in some form or other (although if Hladky had signed we wouldn't have done other than Martin). Much of the coaching staff as well as Luongo have experience in Premier League environments.
