The worst I have felt as a football supporter. 23:28 - Jul 14 with 2046 viewsMercian

Was as a 12 year old boy when Ipswich were relegated in 1986. Nothing comes close to that. Ipswich till I die, England till I wake up with a mild hangover tomorrow morning. Not really, I will always support England but I tend not to that their failures bother me anymore.

I was at the match tonight and Wembley vs Italy. Worst for me was leaving CR in the playoffs.

I woke up at 4am it was the first thing on my mind,England lost.

I think Spain were the better team, and England did well to get to the final as at times they were a blooming snore fest to watch.

Oh well cutting a few hedges today, that will cheer me up.

Woke up for work at 6.00 and the first thing that entered my mind was that my son, aged 17, got his first century in men's cricket yesterday, 106 not out. An emotional occasion.

Then I remembered the football.

Then I went back to the cricket.

That was so unfair being relegated. From memory we were safe and Oxford had to play Arsenal several days after the rest of the final games had been played. They needed to beat a side that were playing so well and they did. I don't think the last matches have ever been on separate days since. Unfair.

I was 26 at the time, and that was the worst I've ever felt given my first game was in 1969 and throughout that time we had been a First Division team.

Worst for me was West Ham play off 05, to not go,up after having it in our hands. And it cost us until last year. England, meh, think of us!

I think the worst I ever felt after a game was after Middlesbrough away in 81. I didn’t go. My dad and I were doing a bit of work on my sister’s recently bought house and had the radio on. I’d seen quite a few of the matches that season, despite work getting in the way and boy were we a good side.

With the result we just stared at each other. Gutted. The best team in the country that season by a mile but failed to prove it. I’ve always felt a bit sour about the UEFA Cup. Norwich are proud to have participated. For me it was the rubber bone consolation prize that season. It was the title or the FA Cup I wanted. Halcyon days.

The relegations? I’ve known four and we well and truly deserved all of them, so while uber disappointed, I could live with that. England? 1990. We should have won that game.

It is what it is. Wins and losses. It’s not ‘real life’ but a great distraction from the tough realities and like everything else, in sport whether playing golf on Saturday or watching last night it’s 100% commitment from me.

I'm the same; the 1986 relegation brought out emotions that I had not experienced before. I remember being so upset with Paul Marnier, who waa my hero, that he could let it happen. He wasn't even playing for Arsenal against Oxford, but I felt that he surely would have conveyed the importance of that game to his teammates, therefore ensuring 100% commitment & victory. He let me down.
I think Coventry could have gone too, but they had also won their last game; I've always held that against them too.
It would appear that I was quite a spiteful child.

I was meh at the start of the tournament, and that hasn’t changed as it progressed. The sterile play and low blocking isn’t something which drums up passion. Very much like the playoff year with McCarthy - the destination was better than the journey.

If it was Town in a final whilst playing largely passively I’d be fuming for a few days. But as it’s England I’m over it all ready. It doesn’t help that you have a choice of watching Gary ‘look how much I earn while they lock up pensioners’ Lineker on one channel, or Roy ‘Fraud’ Keane on the other.

Roll on August.

Agree, still the worst i've felt after a football match/season. With England i used to watch the games on edge like a lot of people but more recently have been much more relaxed during games and just accept whats happening!
England got to the final etc but are far from the second best team in that Euro's. France, who i'll admit pre tournament were my pick, were similarly disappointing but just think of the game they gave the spanish in the semi despite all that. They were all over them in the last 30 minutes. We struggled to get the ball even after we'd scored on the break.

I always want us to win but never expect us to do well so I never feel that disappointed even when we come so close.

I was more upset losing the FA cup semi final at Villa Park in 1981 than being relegated.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over
