Plan A signings 17:52 - Jul 15 with 2895 viewschenners17

Pleased with the signings made but thinking about who we have got and have gone big for, it does feel like we have missed out on a few Plan A targets:

Downes for CM
Philogene for LW
Ionnadis for ST
Rushworth for GK

Even Real Madrid sometimes misses out on their preferred signings.

We are a recently promoted team to the PL completing with established top flight teams (both here and aboard). We’ll miss out on targets but that’s football - and behind the scenes the club will continually be identifying players for bids etc.

Out of those 4 only really gutted about Philogene

Downes - good player but never really going to happen as was no risk for him re-siging with Saints. Think we can find as good if not a better option.

Philogene - a real shame to miss out, like him a lot as a player.

Ionnadis - total unknown which could have been anything. Not going to cry about missing on a player I've never seen and most of of our fans wouldn't have heard of a few weeks ago.

Rushworth - not fussed. Not convinced he would be a good fit as not as good with ball at his feet as Vaz, Muric fits the brief much better and quite happy with Plan B here.

How do we know we missed out on any of these. How much were we really in for them. What was the reason they did not get over the line. Maybe we chose not to complete and not the other way round. How many players do we decide not to follow through that we may or may not know about.

Every team misses out on targets for whatever reason. Maybe we should be looking at who we got that others wanted and wallow in the glory that others missed out and they came here instead.

It's only the ones we sign that matter. Those that chose not to join us are not welcome.

We do know we missed out on Philogene fact, we also know we bid for the Greek guy because reputable people said so. Phil also said we wanted Downes as well and even come close to valuation but the player didn’t want to come. We didn’t get our plan A also in the last few windows and it hasn’t worked out badly has it. Excited about all our signings tbh and what’s to come. Sometimes missing players can be a blessing. We shall see.

Missed out or as I prefer to see it, being sensible with financial planning.

We have a player profile that will match a few players and we’ll have a financial profile that fits also, I’d much rather get both the player and the deal right than to have our hands forced by agents or other clubs. Sorry couldn't find the right button so not intended as a reply to the individual highlighted

It’s our first year back in the ‘big time’ in nearly 2 decades. Sad as it is, footballers today probably don’t realise the size of the support we draw. You talk to a 20 year old fan of a ‘plastic glory hunting team’ it’s all ‘what does your stadium hold 20k?’ ‘Have they ever won a trophy’. One lad thought West Ham were on a par with Spurs (simply because they have a big stadium now) he was shocked when I said compare their honours and come back to me…

We need to establish ourselves before we really attract ‘elite’ players, right now sadly we are below historically smaller lower league teams like Brighton, Fulham, Bournemouth. But it’s great to be talked about again, and I’m confident KM will keep us up with a platform to crack on from there.

Downes was probably on the list but we have no idea he was a A target.

Philogene seems to have been

I got pelters for saying Ionnadis was the type of risky signing we wouldn't make so not convinced he was an A target.

Brighton refusing to sell Rushworth. Not much we can do about that.

Truly impaired.

I dont think we have A, B, C targets so to speak but players with a skill set who can do a job and we go for them when we have a chance at the right price and time, saying players are a prioity for me aint right cause in each position i think we have several all pretty much much of a muchness and can all do a job.

How do we know they were plan A?

For example I've not seen anywhere that factually states Downs was plan A
Conversely if plan A even exists how do you know that Downs isn't plan C and we missed out on plan A & B

Although I dont think top teams have plan A, B etc approach, they will identify (for example) 3 strikers and they are happy with 1 from 3. From there they will approach the players clubs to see if they are available, place a bid etc.
It's possible KM wanted either Delap or Lonnadis or X, and the Delap transfer was the one finalised.

....gone for Skipp from Spurs, or at least been linked.

He totally fits "the profile".

Phil didn't say that about downes did he?
Think you've confused something?

To be fair, we’re living in a world now with endless journalism covering transfer windows & potential targets.

There are probably a few examples of those who went on to become Town legends, who weren’t actually ‘plan A’ when they were signed
