Do we have enough of firepower at present to trouble a lot of premiership clubs on 06:10 - Jul 17 by ElephantintheRoom | Time was when Town supporters supported their own players rather than constantly crave other teams players and rented mercenaries. They have scored quite a few in recent seasons. And might actually be looking forward to the challenge. |
Yet four of our best ever players from the Robson era and the majority of the 1962 Championship team were ‘other teams players and rented mercenaries’. If you are harping back to the good ole days of Robson, they’re gone. You can blame the structure of the English game that makes bringing players through a dubious activity, given the best are hoovered by Man City etc for crumbs. Secondly, blame Sheepshanks and Evans whose incompetence left our youth set up in a state.along with the rest of the club. You might loathe the current owners, who have overseen and funded our promotion to the Premier League, but the lack of youth players in the team or providing finance sits at others’ door.

And don’t forget that the current owners have stated that they want a Cat 1 academy - so developing youth is obviously import@nt to them.

You mean like Belfitt, Johnson, Mariner, Hunter, Baxter, Hegan, Best, Muhren, Robertson, etc, etc.?

Do we have enough of firepower at present to trouble a lot of premiership clubs on 07:24 - Jul 17 with 670 views | BlueBoots | Every transfer window since Paul Cook did his demolition man job, the squad has just evolved naturally with the players we bring in. So far this window we have replaced JD with Johnson, Jackson with Delap (as he can play both RW and CF), Ndaba (when he does move) with Greaves and Omari with, well...Omari. Based on last season's squad we are still a couple of attacking players light; started that season with Ladapo and Scarlett, who we replaced with Sarmiento and Moore in the winter window - so can safely assume we are looking at replacements for both of those...

Indeed they have. And it is not to be forgotten that while the success of the team has been astonishing, the rebuilding of the club’s structures and facilities to where they need to be will take a long time.
Do we have enough of firepower at present to trouble a lot of premiership clubs on 07:55 - Jul 17 with 608 views | Vic | I’m not sure what is says but we were the top championship scorers last season, yet our top scorer only got 13 league goals! That’s a crazy stat and must say something about the team as a whole. We’re obviously not going to score as many this season, but the big question is if we have the same firepower throughout the team. I think we probably have enough to survive, and maybe to be mid table - but it’s a tough tough league.

Do we have enough of firepower at present to trouble a lot of premiership clubs on 17:48 - Jul 16 by FrimleyBlue | Looking at the fitness of the players I think KM is turning quite a few of our players into prem efficient players. I'm gonna go for Harness as surprising town player next season. |
Been saying this elsewhere since promotion arrived, think his game is well suited to the prem.

No I mean Crawford and Phillips, Crawford an O’Rourke, Dozzel and Kiwomya, Johnson and Stewart. In every previous promotion the people who supported Town supported their own players. Only in recent years have they started doing the polar opposite.

You don’t really mean that do you! O’Rourke was signed from Middlesborough, Crawford from Portsmouth, Johnson from Everton and Stewart from Huddersfield. Yes there were many, many home grown players in the 70’s - and even into the 80’s. But it was only a very, very short golden youth period of the mid 70’s when the youth set up actually produced f quality first team players. Other than that we’ve relied on buying from other teams pretty much the whole time. More recently the majority of the youth players just haven’t kicked on - for whatever reason. The current owners cannot be blamed for that, and if they are true to thier word (which even you must admit they have been so far) we should see a better quality youth system devekop8ng.

Think he means the other Johnson however all you say is valid. We no longer have a conveyor belt supplying homegrown players. Hopefully CAT1 , when it happens, will put that right. Youth development seems to be our area of weakness.
