I wonder why we don’t seem to be signing players from abroad? 00:44 - Aug 4 with 6513 viewsMatt_Netherlands

I noticed even teams like Derby are signing players from overseas, so it got me wondering why we aren’t shopping in foreign markets….

Not saying I necessarily think any / all of these are true, but it is quite noticeable how we now haven’t signed an hiurseas player for the first team in more than a decade!

- Is our newly expanded scouting network not yet established enough to identify the right targets?

- Is Kieran worried than language barriers may inhibit team cohesion and disrupt our style of play?

- Do we see them as higher risk signings and therefore a lot more due diligence and analysis is required?

- Does Mark Ashton refuse to pay for international calls?

- Do foreign transfers result in a different structure which doesn’t work as well for FFP?

What nonsense. He went away to the African Nations Cup and our form went backwards.

Are you joking? He was one of the laziest players I’ve ever seen grace a town shirt. Thought the exceptionally long contract and the poor return on investment was a well trodden and generally agreed upon discussion.

Forgot the amount of times he’d lose runners by not tracking back or let players peel off him. A few tricks and good goals aside, he was on the down slope.

This seems even more curious now that we’re seemingly unable to agree a deal for a shampoo shop player in Smozdics, and any other deals seem to be really dragging on or being overinflated in price! (E.g. The £17m mentioned for the Sheff Utd CB)

We won 3 and lost 1 while he was away.

Both of those players were ready when the going got tough.

Pretty sure we got relegated.

And didn't Sereni pull out of a match because he was a bit tired ?

Traditionally our overseas scouting has been worse than terrible (I say that knowing someone who was a scout during the ME years) so it's no surprise we're playing catchup.

Ashton said we're moving into those areas but it's not something that happens overnight. We need to staff up, get the whole Euro scouting system working properly and then start following players for a period of time to make sure they're right for us.

I've no doubt that'll come good soon. Now we're a Prem club people abroad might actually have heard of us, too...

As someone mentioned, squad balance is a huge consideration. And trust between the management, coaching staff and players - that seems to be the single biggest reason for our recent success.

Magiltion literally had to be pulled off Finidi once after a game because he tried to strangle him.

More difficult to do detailed due diligence on a player’s character when they’re overseas maybe? It is a bit strange, but in this world where stats are increasingly used in recruitment and we know KM values character fit equally, have we got the resources to scout as thoroughly as we’d need to?

We have bid, our biggest bid on a foreign player though so clearly they are looking in that market. It’s seems a small pond with 3-6 clubs all looking at the same players. Cajuste maybe something we look at again now Brentford deal fell through and be interesting to see if a fee is agreed for Fotis, do we go back in for him.

I don't think our scouting network has had anywhere near enough time to do anything meaningful. It would have only really been implemented properly last season.

Language barrier may well be something we want to avoid until we have good trusted bi-lingual coaches in the building, that too takes time. Don't want a generic translator ironically losing footballing talk in translation.

It's also notoriously tough to judge a player in foreign leagues that aren't always as competitive as the Championship, let alone the Premier. Only the PL, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 are better (when considering finances) and we see the top clubs hoover up talent in those leagues very quickly.

We're shopping in a very small pond at the moment.

IF we do relatively well this season, that will change dramatically, but we all know the magnitude of that challenge.
