“But we are seeing a great fragmentation of society, really caused by the economic theory that we’re operating under of neoliberalism, where everything is a commodity,” he said.
This global emphasis on individualism and competition is destroying social bonds, eroding public welfare and services and is empowering harmful industries and corporations, he said.
“It may appear on the surface that previous generations had it more difficult, given the Great Depression, world wars and nuclear threats,” McGorry said. “But actually, there’s much less security and hope for the future surrounding the current generation than ever before. The challenges today’s generation of young people face are unprecedented, they’re devastating, and they’re worse than they’ve ever been.”

Couple our insanely selfish and short-sighted ego-consumer system with the compulsion to present a false front on social media and the still somehow almost taboo fact that the greatest threat of all, a cascading unbalancing of interlinked environmental systems, is almost out of our hands to deal with now (whereas economics, world wars and nuclear threats always were in our control) and you can understand why kids who haven't had their chance to live yet are deeply and justifiably depressed.

We're charging towards catastrophe and we all bloody well know it. But we can't make selfless, honest and fundamental changes because, apparently, 'that's not how the world works'. What a sh!tty and selfish excuse that is, and what a price our descendants are going to pay for it.

A load of angry frustrated youngsters took to the streets recently in protest of what they thought of the country, obviously many overstepped the mark, but seeing people chucked in prison left right and centre, and labelled far right, I reckon most will now suffer in silence and feel there is nowhere to turn.

Would be lovely if the government looked at the youngs concerns and addressed it. Appreciate this will take time though

Whilst racism and hideous, criminal, manipulative disinformation were the driving forces of the riots, it's hard to argue that inequality of wealth and inequality in educational outcomes didn't play a significant part in some of the involvements.

Our whole economic system needs to change and it needs to change genuinely and radically and above all very, very quickly.

My frustration with the older generations is the obsession with the ‘we had it harder’ narrative.

There’s a stigma with mental health, especially with men, you’re weak apparently if you talk about your emotions or show signs of weakness.

I think one of the big driving factors is probably social media too, the young are obsessed with it and seeing how XYZ are looking like this, or dressing like this, or buying this - takes a huge toll on someone who then feels they may be ugly or a certain size or inadequate.

usually people compare there life with others and before social media it was just friends/family. now it's john who's 19 and owns a mansion and lambo..

Good for you. They are such insidiously addictive devices (coupling their portability with their access to trash content obviously) and like fags or crack cocaine they're hard to use on an occasional basis without slipping into a continuous use mode and hardly noticing what you're doing.

Every time you stop yourself and put the thing face down and go and do something healthy, give yourself a quiet little pat on the back and build your resistance up further.

Most of the people getting convicted of their Very Real Concerns are in their 30's and older.

I’m sure the likes of you just follow me around gagging to use the same boring sht replies.

I’ve seen the ages of those convicted, and unlike you I’m not going to cherry pick the ages to fit with my thoughts.

Young and old were involved in the shameful behaviour.

Looking at the Orwell Bridge it is perverse that this structure is the route for imports and trade ( and the import of dream commodities) and also the place where some people end it all to escape the broken/failed dream of the false promises of capitalism.

Suicide is the biggest killer of our kids, not refugees.

A huge bearing on good mental health is having agency, so a benefit trap in which you live on handouts is also very depressing.
Commoditization is one form of individualism, but then so is feminism, LGBT activism, and whatever you call the Andrew Tate type of behaviour.
An emphasis on service rather than self-actualization is more likely to be beneficial for mental health.

We often adopt technology without stopping to think of the potential harm it can do, then it becomes very difficult not to comply. At the very least we can control how we use technology to make sure that it is only a tool and not a prison. It's great that you came to your realization on your own, but this should now be taught to all children.

It's interesting that you start a thread about your concerns about mental health and you don't treat other posters as human beings who have different perspectives on life and you use such hateful language. If you can enlighten people, you won't do it by calling them names. Try constructing a convincing argument.
There is too much tribalism in society in general, but certainly on this board.

Almost everything you say is incorrect. Fascinating.

“Andrew Tate type of behaviour” is alleged sex trafficking. Which shouldn’t be compared to feminism and the LGBT movement which are both fighting for equal rights for people marginalised in society.

And there is no benefit trap. There should be a welfare safety net for people who can’t afford the basics to live. This country has got progressively worse at providing even that. There is a wealth inequality trap though - with our failing capitalist system not willing to share out the vast sums of money even slightly evenly to an impoverished population.

We're all seeing the pressures young people face today, but instead of just pointing fingers, it's better to focus on taking action to support them.

I feel like quoting your own words back to you to apply them to what you said "Almost everything you say is incorrect. Fascinating."
When I mentioned Andrew Tate, I didn't mean alleged sex trafficking, I was thinking more of the commoditization of relationships into transactions and a measure of status. That is an ancient and primitive behaviour that has recently been repolarized. It's a very selfish anti-family and anti-social culture.
Feminism and the LGBT movement started as fighting for equal rights, but have morphed into movements to get special rights and just have become self-actualization and gratification movements. A good society puts children first and family is the structure that best supports children and builds good communities and society in general.

It's lovely that you don't think that the benefit trap exists but I've lived it myself and witnessed it too. The government also lets companies exploit workers on ridiculous wages that the government subsidizes. I've worked in London in a decent job on stupidly low wages and taken housing benefit and had the hit to my self-esteem where I couldn't provide for my family. It's why I left the UK when I got a much better offer. There is also another benefit trap that keeps families separated because a father living with the mother of his child will reduce benefit payments.

Throughout human history, the elites knew that they are outnumbered and they have to give their underlings something to lose otherwise there will be violent revolt. The system adjusts based on pressure from below.
