Stealth smoking ban 10:32 - Aug 29 with 6873 viewsgiant_stow

A possible ban on smoking in pub (edit) gardens, but more importantly I think, on pavements outside pubs, parks, hospitals etc...

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/aug/29/smoking-could-be-banned

I realise this will be great news to many, but it seems a little dishonest to me - basically, it'll leave smoking banned anywhere but you own property / a field. I also wonder how enforceable it will be, unless they'll rely on peer pressure.

I lost my old man at the age of 65 to lung cancer. He was a 60-80 a day man who would light one up the minute the last one went out. A total waste of getting to old age and enjoying his grandchildren, one of whom is nearly 18 and he never lived to see.

But it was his life, he enjoyed it and I have no issues with threads like these. Thankfully, growing up in the sixties and seventies, the long drives with both parents smoking for the entire journey put me off ever wanting to take a single puff.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Starmer says it’s to protect the NHS,smoking costs the NHS £2.6b a year and smoking is on the decline !how ever Obesity costs £6.5 b to deal with. If he really wants to protect the NHS deal with a problem that is getting larger every year!
O/T a bit but has anyone’s local NHS trust started overtime at weekends to deal with the waiting lists as promised by Starmer? Mine here in Craigavon hasn’t.

I'm assuming they'll create some stogi type police force to gather their fines.

To give my thoughts on this, if anyone cares.....

I'm a non smoker, ironically the only time I did smoke was when the indoor smoking ban came in, everyone left the club/pub en masse to smoke so I just joined them.

But I'm also a very firm believer in personal choice so don't agree at all with suggestions to ban fags completely, albeit I think the indoor smoking ban is 100% right. I think pub beer gardens are prob fare game too, as non smokers will def get the second hand smoke in those places.

Restricting other additional outdoor spaces feels a bit much for this liberal though.

My Mrs is doing politics at Uni and she says this is a classic case of testing the public opinion. They can predict twenty years ahead how society's views will change. Same sex marriage was one of the things she did a study on in college last year and she said they were mapping out a timeframe years before Cameron brought it to the HOC.

I’m sorry that happened to you.
As much as I’ve enjoyed a smoke over the years,it’s a daft thing to do when you think about it health wise, and of course financially.
My mum smoked from a young age,and she died of cancer in her early 80s.

Thank you.

It's a long time ago now but still feels like yesterday.

Not abhorrent, no. Its a very difficult habit to break.

I have some good friends who smoke.

Similar experience here as well. Both parents smoked and I never wanted to because of it

I remember going into working mens clubs with my mum and dad on a Saturday night in the late 70s and you couldn’t see across the room it was that thick with smoke!
But back then and especially in the 70s it was ‘cool’ to smoke, and of course those F1 cars looked the part with all the tobacco advertising on them.

We should ban cars, nearly 30,000, that's a Portman Road full house, killed or seriously injured every year, the financial impact in dealing with car crashes is huge way outweighed by the taxation created by cars. Plus has an immense environmental impact.

But I bet they won't.

Congrats on the dumbest argument in the thread.

So the downvoters. Dirty smokers who are offended by me abhorring smoking and wanting out phased out or people who don't like pubs?

No, people who prefer facts.
