Brandon Williams 09:07 - Sep 17 with 10054 views | Chris_ITFC | https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5764645/2024/09/17/brandon-williams-manchester- “Over time, however, information started to get back to United, revealing that he had not been living his life in the way that would ordinarily be expected of a professional sportsman. Erik ten Hag, United’s manager, had already decided that Williams was not for him, but the club were alarmed by what they heard. There was evidence of a young man who had started to lose his way and was not listening to the right people. All sorts of hangers-on had attached themselves to Williams, as often happens with young United stars, and perhaps he was not worldly or experienced enough to appreciate it might not always have been good for him.” “ At the end of the season, however, he did plan to join the Ipswich players on a trip to Las Vegas that had been arranged to celebrate promotion and, as such, was never going to be a quiet affair. Ipswich got wind of it and, collectively, it was decided that Williams’ involvement would not be a good idea in the circumstances. This story, above all, maybe sums up his jumbled priorities at a time when he is also trying to rescue his career.”

But I am sure if he was serious about getting back on track, he could walk into a Championship or Lg1 team on a light/short contract and prove himself again. Needs to find that motivation I guess, and it can only come from him. Important to drop the deadweights in his life who have been leading them astray.

People complaining about decent journalism costing pennies online is one of my biggest petty frustrations. Room 101 with you.

He might need to get his court case out of the way before a club would sign him (next March, per the article).

Good point, that might limit him to non-professional teams if he at least wants to keep in shape. What stage is he at with the case, has he entered a plea?

Don't know. The article referred to it. Dangerous driving with witnesses saying he'd been inhaling nitrous oxide... might get away with a community sentence, but that isn't guaranteed...

Just done me some Googlin' I will only state facts - avoiding speculation about an ongoing legal case, to avoid a thread-pull: He was charged in April with dangerous driving and driving without insurance. He plead not guilty. Trial is slated for 17th March and is expected to last 3 days.

Brandon Williams on 14:41 - Sep 17 with 1637 views | joshITFCporter | A very good read as always from the Athletic. It's great to hear that he's training ready for a return to a club in January, however I fear the trial not starting until March might hinder his chances at a Championship club. Will be a great pickup for whomever, if he can keep his head down and carry on wiht the career his ability warrants

Brandon Williams on 13:12 - Sep 17 by glasso | I see this argument a lot - people complaining about the drop in standards of journalism (I agree, by the way) and lamenting the introduction of AI (I agree, by the way), while complaining about having to pay for it. When I started as a journalist in 2004, the pay was pretty crap - hence why I'm no longer in journalism. Today, the pay is almost exactly the same as I was getting, only the journalists are expected to write for 6 publications at once and churn out 20 articles a day for online because ad clicks are the only source of income. Honestly, I despair at how appalling most journalism is nowadays, but we've only got ourselves to blame. |
FWIW I pay for the Athletic and I am led to believe that the writers there are well renumerated for their efforts? Albeit they were already the cream of the crop in terms of sports journalism It does show how far the drop off between a £1 a month subscription and a free article on something like FLW can be 7 days ago FLW published an article saying how Birmingham should sign Brandon Williams!

Thanks. Would be nice if people remember though, before "casting aspersions" in future, that not everyone has spare cash for inessentials.

The charge relating to impaired driving relating to the alleged nitrous oxide inhalation was dropped if I remember rightly.

Lol I didn't cast aspersions, I stated that people expecting quality journalism for free frustrate me. Two completely different things.

Brandon Williams on 16:48 - Sep 17 with 1261 views | MK1 | Such a good footballer and would have loved to see him here permanently. Unfortunately, he can't seem to sort himself out, so no good for us. Hope he gets all the help and advice he needs and makes some kind of comeback as a player. Maybe a Championship club will take a punt if he can sort his life out.

Yes, think that was an error in The Athletic piece. Certainly he only pleaded not guilty to the two charges.
