What player were you in the playground? 13:57 - Sep 26 with 6069 viewswiltshireblue

I'm sure like many kids we all had a 'go to player' that you 'were' when playing football in the primary school playground, a great way of aging us too

Bearing in mind it was around this time that I relocated to Wiltshire I can assure you I was in the minority with my choices of Forrest / Stockwell / Kiwomya depending upon the position I was playing at the time.

John Sammels. I was at Grundisburgh primary where it was said he used to shoot a tennis ball from one door to another across the front of the building.
Weird how those memories stick!

He went out with the daughter of my mum and dad's friends who I think used to live in Parham and I had the odd kick about with him when I was a kid.

Playgroundwise - Pele, Georgie Best and Jimmy Robertson.

Going to show my age now.

Ray Crawford.

I’ll show my age too.

Eusébio da Silva Ferreira - the great Eusebio to you and me.

At junior school, everybody wanted to be Pele, George Best, Jimmy Greaves or him.

I was Brian Talbot because Mum sowed a number 4 on the very crude and not really similar ipswich shirt ( solid plastic badge with the solid white V neck) that I used to wear for games at school!

Thinking back... at the time I left the school I think they then got a couple of Dutch kids in.... no idea if they were any good!!

Christ we're old. Asked the same question down the pub the other night and one of them said Ronaldo. A kid old enough to drink pretended to be a player who is still playing.

Poll: New hobby suggestions for NeedhamChris.

He deserved a slap for that! Ronaldo indeed.

My first Ipswich hero was John O’Rourke. Now I feel very old.

I wish I’d appreciated the Robson years more at the time.

Truly magical times. Felt like we belonged. Teams feared us. We had a real swagger. Loved every bl00dy minute of it.

Half the teams we played looked beaten as they walked out. Hammering Man Utd (saw us do that a few times), beating Liverpool at home (never away) being better than most season after season- situation normal. Today’s entitled clubs? Chelsea? Rubbish. Spurs - always beat them. Arsenal? Usually got the better of them. Man City? Ordinary.

Struggled against Revie’s dirty Leeds early 70s then matched and overtook them. Always an edge to those games though.

The top table. Belonging.

You've actually nailed the whole era for me ... exactly how I felt... never feared ANY opposition at home !

I was young at the time but, yeah, I do wish that I'd appreciated it more at the time. Thing is, I never thought that it would end, silly me !

Anyway, I was always Allan Hunter becuase I wasn't good enough, despite having the haircut, to be Paul Mariner.
