Omari back on the right please on 09:25 - Oct 17 with 3362 views | _clive_baker_ | It'll be interesting to see who plays at the back for Everton. Its tended to be Garner, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Young, but the Ukrainian guy could play left back. Branthwaite is deceptively quick but I do think our high energy and pacy front 4 can cause them problems. Personally I think we'll start with Burns on the right, Hutchinson 10 and Szmodics on the left. Ogbene & Clarke to come on to the right and left respectively 2nd half.
Omari back on the right please on 09:49 - Oct 17 with 3251 views | itfcjoe | Just posted this on another thread: I think we've clearly recruited to have Clarke and Szmodics as options as the Left 10 (not left wing), Hutchinson and Chaplin as the Right 10 (not the 10) and Burns and Ogbene as the right sided player. There are many reasons for this - firstly McKenna likes his 10s to be playing on the opposite side to their strongest foot - this is handy for two reasons....firstly when they are receiving cut backs from Davis or Burns, they are receiving the ball in stride on their strongest foot (Chaplin receiving them from Davis, Broadhead receiving them from Burns in previous seasons). Also, both the 10s drift wide, and can open up two passing lanes - one they can hit the ball to the far side of the pitch in stride for the person running on to it, and they can curl the ball behind the opposition full back for the wide player to get. If you look at the heat maps, average positions, touch maps, etc - Hutchinson spends far more time out wide on the right than Szmodics is on the left, and people are complaining that Szmodics is playing as a left winger and should be as a 10 which just isn't the case, he is playing as a 10. Without being blunt people need to watch it more closely and focus on what they are watching. The RW role this season, is seeing far more defensive work because a number of teams we face will put 5 along the front line in possession which means they drop in, is that really where we want Omari? I think Omari has had a pretty good season so far, the difference is though in the Championship when you beat a man and drive forward you get close to goal and making something happen, in the Premier League you can do the same and all it buys you is a pass in your own half so it's so much more work to look impressive but he's breaking tackles and breaking lines on the pitch and is getting better each week

I wouldn't agree that Hutchinson is improving every week. His best performances of the season were against Liverpool & Fulham IMO, where he looked a cut above the rest of our side. He's struggled away from home, objectively speaking he was poor at Southampton and his retention was below par. I don't think West Ham was his finest hour either, but that's true of just about everyone. There should be zero danger to his place though, he's got bags of talent and I think supporters need to recognise that as a 20 year old finding his feet in the hardest league in world football he will blow hot & cold. To my mind there's just no justification to not play Hutchinson in the central 10 behind Delap right now, its a no brainer. There are valid question marks around who plays right and left though, I don't think Burns or Ogbene have really made the right their own yet which I was hoping to see. Arguably the same with Szmodics and Clarke. Very different profiles and an element of horses for courses with them, I'd be inclined to go with the former on Saturday for his positional discipline and work rate. James Garner's quick and IMO a really good footballer, that's going to be an interesting battle to see if Davis can get any joy against him.

"To my mind there's just no justification to not play Hutchinson in the central 10 behind Delap right now, its a no brainer. " This is the thing I don't get No wins yet, no goals scored by Hutch, Burns, Clarke or Ogbene, Delap has scored vast majority of our goals, yet it's a no brainer to stick with that experiment but other positions should be looked at? When we start winning of course it's fine to say it's working, but until then, it's not. His output is no different to those around him, yet because he's twinkle toes occasionally, he's being seen as a perfect 10, it's bizarre personally. He can't hold the ball up, that's not his fault, it's not his game, he's a quick footed direct player. We're sending balls into him from Morsy, Phillips and Muric and it's coming straight back at us. Hutch is great at breaking up play, he's had that little ankle biter attitude since he joined us and I love that about him. And I also will add his dribbling and his twinkle toes :) do help get us up the pitch, which is important. I dunno, I think I personally would be happy to see a change, or at least see some upturn in results because this for me is what stops me from appreciating him in that 10 role, it just doesn't seem to do much, 1 goal involvement, only 6 shots at goal in 7 games. Hutch offers so much more than that.

To my mind he's our best player, our most attacking threat in the side outside of the #9. Where do you want your best player? Where would Everton least want him? For me that's centrally with the licence to roam, find pockets of space, and be creative right across the pitch, rather than on the right. I say keep him and Delap where they are, Morsy & Phillips behind (perhaps an argument for Cajuste at some stage), a settled back 5 (as best as we can with injuries) and the rotation comes through the left and right side. We've had a lot of change in a short amount of time, its inevitable to me that we won't be hitting our stride yet. New players learning the patterns of play, the tactical elements, each others' games. That will come quicker through a level of consistency in what we're doing and repetition, I don't think moving the pieces will help particularly.

Yep. Doesn't take much watching to see that Hutchinson ends up on the right a lot, regardless of his supposed starting position. And whichever of Burns or Ogbene is playing the right hand role has been more of a wing back than out and out winger. We are taking a much more defence minded approach (compared to last 2 seasons) for the most part, as we'd get horribly punished otherwise. The West Ham game showed that, with us not getting the approach quite right and paying the price. [Post edited 17 Oct 2024 10:56]

Personally out wide, Everton can then think about how to stop him coming inside or going out so they'll send another man over, this free's up space in the middle for Szmodics to cause danger in the gaps left or a chappers even Burns and Ogebene are too similar, useful if balls are being played over the top for them to run onto but if not, neither really cause any dangers for prem defences so fullbacks don't really have much to worry about on that side and can venture forward and cause us problems with an overload on that side, so the other potential positive by putting hutch wide is that the opponent fullbacks may even stay back more allowing us a bit more breathing space on that side. You ask where Everton would want him. they'd want him in the middle roaming, because when we're looking for the outball from defence, if it;s not davis then its coming his way and he's been easily pushed off the ball this season in that situation, so for Everton imo that would be what they'd want. They wouldn't want someone on the flanks getting hold of the ball who can turn inwards, outwards, with quick feet, quick mind causing issues resulting in the need to bring across another defender, this then free's us space in the middle of the park for our other real dangerous players. We can only but see how this plays out of course. And im well aware it'll most likely stay as it is, I just don't appreciate why

You can be as blunt as you like; I'm getting far too easily annoyed with people continuously misrepresenting how we play and continuously suggesting changes which have no basis in reality, particularly with the oft-repeated question of "Clarke or Szmodics at left wing?" - we DON'T HAVE A ******* LEFT WINGER! Similarly... well exactly as you have said far more eloquently. Sorry, rant over. Btw. the most obvious examples of your second reason are all Chappers' 'round the full back' balls for Burns last season, and the swing out to Davis for the trivela goal.

Man, he holds the ball up really well, ffs, not in a big-man-back-to-goal kind of way, but he receives the ball and turns and scares defenders into just jockeying him while support is gathering. His distribution and decision making has to improve a bit to be a top player (and it certainly will) but he holds the ball up really well. Edit: bit harsh, sorry. He has been a bit rushed at times this season, and run into trouble too quickly and lost the ball that way, which is I guess what you mean, but that's more of a fine-tuning tactical thing rather than an inability to play that role. suggesting changes which have no basis in reality, Can see why you get frustrated when some are just wanting to see something tried differently whilst we chase our first win. Also, it may help to be a bit more open minded about how people talk on the forum, most that call the left wing spot know it's a not a traditional winger, same as the right and the same for the 10 role, and people saying hutch ventures to the right abit, I am aware of that and most likely those you've mentioned are also aware, we've just not felt the need to be absolutely specific about the positions we're talking about when saying things like left wing. There are no further players on that left hand side, hence the phrase left wing being used.

I feel that I have been paying attention, but haven't studied heat maps, so am always very happy to be educated and informed. I do find it particularly interesting when data and statistics can demonstrate that a perception one has (even if not based in some kind of bias) is just wrong. That being the case, do you know how Jack Clarke's heat map compares with Szmodics? The impression I have been getting is that SS has, as you say, not been playing out on the left, but that Clarke has been playing at least a little bit more like a conventional winger than SS. But I'm always prepared to be shown to be wrong! McKenna has worked wonders with our lop-sided approaches over the last couple of years. Not only is there no reason why a team's approach has to be symmetrical, but it strikes me (on an anecdotal level) that such an approach can be difficult to prepare for, or anticipate, especially if it imperceptibly shifts on 60 minutes when the next ice hockey style 'line' comes on!

I think i just need to take a step back and ignore the results and desire to see our first win and just enjoy his performances, i think thats possibly causing me to overlook certain aspects as it could just be that im more keen to see szmmodics centrally than wanting hutch on the right if that makes any sense.

Completely agree with you. I do find it interesting that we can signed Clarke I have to say. At Sunderland, despite being right footed and playing on the left, he was a touchline hugger (heat maps back that up too). A proper winger, not a 10. And he was very good at it too. That was obviously never going to be the plan here with Davis covering that left hand side. [Post edited 17 Oct 2024 11:53]

Good points, sorry, I'm a bit stressed with family health issues today, but I really shouldn't get so worked up about footy. Cheers. (one minor point: Davis is our de facto left winger when we're in full on attack mode, so I suppose that's why I never see LW as a good description for Clarke or Szmodics who are only really 'out wide' in transition, but none of that matters much, as you imply.) They are great links My take from this and thus a question to all, who is our central option? If sammy tends to go left, hutch tends to go right... is this where it's slightly falling a bit flat that we don't actually have someone in the middle, or is it a prem thing where it doesn't really excist?

If so, I doubt its the quality of even the championship, so yes he ultimately looks great. I like Hutchinson, don't get me wrong, but you can't judge anything on this really.

If you look at Delaps heat map, he kinda fills that central area….. I wanted to compare with Hirst, but he hasn’t played enough minutes for it to be meaningful tbh. But I still think Hirst could offer the whole front line a lot more ( bring more forwards into the game), by his hold up and link up play which I don’t think is Delap’s game, yet.
