VAR, What's the point ? 16:31 - Nov 4 with 1313 views | OldFart71 | The major question I have to ask is VAR what's the point ? It costs money to employ officials sitting in a room surrounded by tv screens with the technology of replays in slow motion. It cost money to install and yet the controversy being caused virtually every game is no better than having two line officials and a referee and it definitely hasn't done away with the claim of bias. It's still the same old situation time and again with absolutely no advantage to the game of football where goals are scored and then the excitement taken away by VAR. Where a card is or isn't given and VAR interferes. Where a pen is given then overturned. Just go back to how it was with it's faults and biases because all you have is an expensive load of technology being overseen by officials with faults and biases.

Of course, we - the PL - seem to be the worst at applying it though. Maybe we should ask the Germans to do it for us?

VAR, What's the point ? on 17:27 - Nov 4 with 1213 views | Illinoisblue | It sucks the joy and emotion out of life and for what? Every weekend fans are still moaning about ref’s decisions. Probably more so than ever before. Technology should be used only for ‘did the ball cross the line?’ decisions and, if it can be a quick workable system, for offsides, too. If forensic analysis is needed to see if a striker’s elbow is an inch offside then we may as well go home and clubs should fold. More to the point: WHO ASKED FOR VAR? WHO WANTED IT?

Like a lot of things its a cost : benefit equation but they're not financial ones. The cost is it slows the game down, creates confusion, sucks the life and emotion out of the paying crowd and sanitises the whole experience for the worse. Where's the benefit? Even if you told me there's a few more correct decisions it still doesn't get close to outweighing the cost IMO. Its like setting speed limits on the roads, a trade off between getting the country and economy moving vs. public safety. VAR is akin to setting a 10 mph speed limit on A roads and motorways yet barely seeing any reduction in the number of collisions.
VAR, What's the point ? on 17:37 - Nov 4 with 1177 views | SomethingBlue | It makes pedantic bores and (most) American club owners happy, and keeps TV audiences enthralled – which matters much more these days than the feelings of people who actually attend games.

The problem is that the way in which it's current being used is essentially like playing without it anyway. If the general rule of thumb is just stay with the officials decision pretty much regardless then we may as well do away with it all together. [Post edited 4 Nov 2024 17:48]

It takes the human element out of it. It removes defining moments or creates them for the wrong reasons. Over 90% of decisions were correct before VAR came in - there was never, ever any reason for it to be introduced. Far better to invest the money spent on VAR on referees, training etc.

Who asked for VAR? For decades there’s been calls to employ technology to aid refs. Before VAR, fans, pundits, players and managers all complained when a ref made the wrong decision. The fact that it’s being wrongly used isn’t the fault of technology - I think the referral process is screwed, personally I’ll allow each manager three appeals per match.

That would be worse I think, basically every time a goal is scored the opposition manager would appeal in the hope they could pour over the video looking for some foul play. Just bin it. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

They trialled the appeal system recently at the Girls U17 World Cup.
